RAINBOW BRIDGE

Just this side of Heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge...
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here,
that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food and water and sunshine,
and all our friends are warm and comfortable.
All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor;
those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again,
just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.

The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing:
they miss someone very special to them; who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops
and looks into the distance. The  bright eyes are intent; the eager body quivers.
Suddenly she (or he) begins to break away from the group, flying over the green grass,
his/her legs carrying him/her faster and faster.

YOU have been spotted and when you and your special friend finally meet,
you cling together in joyous reunion, never to  be parted again.
The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress his/her beloved head,
and you look once more into his/her trusting eyes, so long gone for your life buy never absent from your heart. Then you cross the Rainbow Bridge together.

Gina "Gentle Sea Breeze"
April 20, 1993 - October 17, 2001 (7.5 years)

Very much missed......
Our sweet Gina who went from the saddest, most depressed little waif you ever met, to our happiest and liveliest friend in a few short months has crossed the Rainbow Bridge. Gina helped many of the poodles come out of depression and learn how to play! She was very adamant that nobody would lay around feeling sorry for themselves in her presence and that they must get up, play with her and live each day to the fullest.

To our delight Gina went to a wonderful new home after spending months with us and after only a week became very ill. She had a reaction causing total liver failure. We are very saddened that she had so little time with her new family after escaping her life in a cage. We know that even in the short time she was with her new family that they showed love and kindness to her that she deeply appreciated. Thank you Carol and Rob for all you have done for Gina and for the rest of the Poodles.

Gypsy "Royal Black Gypsy"
April 22, 1989 - Aug 2, 2002 (13 years)

Gypsy's Story:

November 2000
Gypsy is a special case. She had some tumors removed from her mammary glands that were tested and benign. When she had her spay operation they found some additional tumors that couldn't be removed. Although they didn't test these ones they expressed that as the others they expect they are benign. Gypsy needs a special retirement home that will provide her with lots of love and affection. She really loves to be held and cuddled. Gypsy has been spayed and had her shots. She is currently under going additional testing to assure us she is in good health.

April 30, 2001
Gypsy has been with us now for about 6 months. In this time she has undergone a variety of medical treatments. She has been diagnosed with Cushing's disease, thyroid problems, trachea problems and now has glaucoma in her left eye. Her internal tumors (which can't be removed) appear to be growing. Our logical vet has advised us to cease medical treatment and allow Gypsy to live out the rest of her days free from poking and prodding as there really is nothing we can do for her medically. The medical treatment required to help lengthen her life will only cause her undo stress, be very intrusive and damage her internal organs. We will continue to treat her holistically to relieve any pain until such time she shows us she is ready to head off to the rainbow bridge.  Gypsy is very happy, energetic and remains the pushy mothering type she always has been. She is very affectionate and loves to cuddle. Our wish for Gypsy would be for her to spend her final months in a home environment with a special human to comfort her. It is a lot to ask someone to take in a special girl like Gypsy knowing that their days with her are numbered. We'd like to think that special human is out there and would be willing to love Gypsy for a while before her final voyage.  Gypsy's last six months with us have been full of fun and far more happiness and love than she has experienced in her entire life. If she ends up staying with us that will be fine by all of us because we would miss her terribly. We would however love to see her spend her final months as a spoilt only pet with someone very caring. Gypsy will not have an adoption fee and must go to a home that fully understands what they are getting into. If you are interested in loving this sweet gal for what time she has left please contact us for more information.

Aug 2, 2002
On Gypsy's final day here on earth she had a great day so perhaps she felt she was ready to move on. She ran and played with her poodle friends in the fenced orchard she loved, ate many of the treats she adored and was surrounded by the people she loved the most. She still took the time to keep all the other dogs in line and be the mother she always felt she should be to them. Little Gypsy lost her battle peacefully in her sleep, curled up by the woodstove where she always liked to snooze. We will miss her terribly but rejoice in the fact that she spent the very best days of her life with us and we sincerely hope it was enough to diminish the memories of her neglected past. Godspeed little Gypsy! We'll see you at the bridge.

Prince "Enchanted Prince"
Sept 2, 1986 - Nov 27, 2002 (16 years)

Prince came to us in tragic condition. He had to be shaved to the skin, had a skin condition, bad eyes, virtually no hearing left and having suffered Rickettes at some point he had very bowed legs. He looked so silly that hadn't the situation been so disgustingly neglectful that we might have poked fun at him. He appeared to be ancient....he was 15 years old and spent much of his life in a cage. The only activity on his mind was breeding and it took much patience to break him of seeing every dog as a potential breeding prospect. Prince never fully recovered from his past neglect, could not be housebroken and would let only a very few trusted people touch him. Even with all he had been through he had a great temperament but avoided human touch.  He adored his fluffy bed and seemed to sit for hours on his "Throne" Under the care of his foster parents Prince got strong and healthy again and even those bowed legs seemed to disappear. He became a true member of the household as we knew at his age there would be very little possibility that he would ever be adopted. If he did get adopted great but if he didn't that was ok because his foster family loved him as did the rest of their dogs. Prince spent probably the best year of his entire life being spoiled and as a member of a family which was something far beyond how he existed up to being rescued.

Our Prince started to have some serious problems with his mouth a year after having his first dental surgery and the vet found that not only did he require some more really extensive dental work but that he had a tumor under his tongue which was preventing him from eating. We couldn't allow him to suffer nor could we expect him to survive long to enjoy having his dental work done and heal, if that is he could even survive the surgery. We sent our dear friend on to the Rainbow Bridge where at 16 ripe years of age he would be young again and find happiness with his friends who went on before him. We will all miss him terribly.

Angie-  AMHL FOSTER
This old Gal gave Mum more than a few semi-heart attacks!! She howled her little brains out, escaped and messed the car up with chili!!! (She never shared either!) Angie went to live in Tennessee after living most of her life in a small kennel with lots of other dogs. She was one of the lucky ones. When she came she didn't even know what a treat was or a toy. We spoiled her and she returned to the Malamonster she should be really fast :) We did lots of hiking with her too! Fun! Unfortunately Angie went through a terrible fire in 2002 at the Sled dog rescue facility and was transferred to Golden Years rescue. Angie then went into foster care with the Sturtz's'  in Flint MI.   Angie FINALLY in 2003 got a forever home in Lander WY YIPPEE!

Sept 3/2004-
The Kanengieter family lost Angie in a short fight with liver failure. It gives me peace knowing that Angie finally had a great home with them and spent her last couple senior years as a much loved, much appreciated member of their family. Angie was about 8 y/o back in 2000 when we fostered her so best guess was that she lived to be roughly 12 years old.

Dean-Oh- 2000 AMHL FOSTER
Poor old Dean-Oh came from the same place Angie did. He needed a cruciate ligament surgery and a place to recover for a while. He couldn't even walk when he got to our place but managed to get up and hobble on three legs after a couple days. He really loved to be massaged and groomed because nobody ever paid that much attention to him. He now lives with another AMHL member and her crew of rescued Malamonsters.

Dean-oh traveled on to the Rainbow Bridge at the beginning of Summer 2003 best guess was that he was 10-11 years old. He will be very much missed by all who knew him.. Godspeed Big Guy!

Crystal
July 1993 - July 2/2005
Abandoned in old age at 11 1/2 years by both her lifelong owner and her breeder.
Loved by many in rescue and her special people Risa, cameron and buddy Max.

Crystal above before being surrendered to rescue.
Confused, filthy and in serious need of a good grooming.
She spent much of her time as a "Yard dog" and sleeping on a cold garage floor.

Crystal after a few short weeks in her special new home a happy, loved house Mal.

Her time as a spoiled companion was much too short.
You deserved better much earlier in your life.
Godspeed old girl, I bet that silver harness looks fabulous on you.

Paris-
April 1/2004 - October 26/05

Paris was my very sweet Suffolk x Scottish Blackface Sheep

Paris as a lamb above

and Paris as a yearling in October 2005

My critters were attacked by a cougar inside their barn sometime between 1:00 am to noon Sunday October 23rd 2005. It's a day that will never leave my thoughts. Although all were vetted quickly Paris as the weakest and meekest got the worst of the attack and it took a lot of stitches to put her back together. I knew her chances were very slim given her very severe injuries but I would not give up on her, she had to be given every opportunity to heal. Paris valiantly hung in there with us for 3 days while we medicated, cleaned and fed her by syringe. In the end it got very nasty for Paris and I could see she had completely given up the fight. I had to make the kindest but hardest choice that was right for her and send her to wait at the Bridge.

......Gosh I do hope there is a special one for farm creatures that is free of Malamutes and predatory wildlife.  Paris is buried near Timmy in the garden she loved to escape into to eat all my veggies.

Solana-Slim
Dec 31/2005
AMHL FOSTER

Solana-Slim was picked up as a stray in January 2005 after wandering and fending for herself for quite some time in the Port Hardy area of Vancouver Island BC. Janet noticed this sweet senior in the pound and soon realized that she needed some medical attention as Solana-Slim has a large mass on one front leg and was not eating at times for days. Her admirer took her to the vet for some tests and realizing Solana-Slims time at the animal control facility was short, she sought help from the AMHL January 29th 2005 and Solana-Slim was literally rescued off death row as she was scheduled to be euthanized on February 1, 2005 for no reason aside from being old, ill and homeless. Things could have been much different for this old gal but fate intervened for Solana-Slim in way of a guardian angel named Janet who she touched with her charm and her warm brown eyes that contained a glimmer of mischief. She was a senior, had kidney disease, had major incontinence problems and a large melanoma on her leg. The day she arrived I never imagined Solana-Slim would be with us very long as she was in horrid condition. What I did know was that even if I had to take her directly to the vet and send her off to Rainbow Bridge the day she got here that I wanted her to go peacefully with someone who cared about her even if her time was short. We were not letting her die alone in the animal control.

Solana-Slim on arrival:

Solana-Slim captured the hearts of all she met in the exactly 333 days she chose to bless us with her funny ways. Although in her early days with us she drove us insane trying to get her to eat and making us feed her up to 60 cooked hotdogs a day. Wendi & I tried everything even home cooked meals and treats. She wouldn't eat anything else and I might mention they had to be "All beef" hotdogs and cooked lol. Eventually we were able to get her on a normal senior diet (how dare we lol). We never knew Solana-Slims age, on arrival I thought she was 12-14 but watching her play I'd think she was more like 8 y/o.

On Dec 31 Solana woke feeling badly and was just not herself. She was watched closely and although nothing was too concerning we decided she should see the vet that day as all would be closed several days for the holiday. We thought perhaps she might have a bit of a belly-ache or a bladder infection or something not too serious going on. Unfortunately Solana-Slim had something more serious going on and we were shocked to find that her kidneys had finally completely failed her. The vet felt that taking her home even for a couple days she would suffer needlessly for only our benefit and we had to make that hard choice to allow her to leave us. In 333 days she had but this one single last day of feeling badly.

A much happier & healthier Solana-Slim the way we will remember her:
