Custom Headlight Install

WARNING:  This probably isn't legal.  I haven't been bothered by the police in the months I have had these installed.  They don't throw significant glare so I think I'll be left alone.

A couple of years ago one of my headlights stopped going up.  It would go down but not up.  So I hand cranked the lights up and hit the button on the dash to leave them up, then I thought about replacements.  I was never happy with the lighting I got from the stock headlights.  It seemed that every car I rode in had significantly better lighting.

I stumbled across the Sylvania Xenarc 1010 Auxiliary low beams and it seemed as if they would fit where the original headlights were if I continued the hood line across.  As a bonus they claim they are DOT approved.  I ordered a set from SUV Lights  and they came in a week or so.  So I busted out the welder and fabbed up a couple of simple brackes out of 1"x1/8" stainless flat stock.  I have a thing about stainless.  the brackets are strong.  Probably too strong.  If I ever get into an accident I think they will punch through whetever I hit. I might weaken them a little so they will give if I hit something.

I wired them into the standard low beam circuit.  Nissan did something smart, when you unplug the headlight motors it defaults to letting the lights turn on.  Yay.

Then it came time to do the body work.  I'm not a professional welder, I've never welded sheetmetal before.
It came out like crap.
TIG and inexperienced sheetmetal welders don't go together.
It's OK, I got another hood cheap that I'll have a professional fix up when I get the body fixed.

The final result.

I think it'll kick ass when the body work is done.

The lighting pattern is a little weird.  There is huge light to the sides and low but very little in the middle.  I haven't had a chance to alight them the way the instructions said, it's a little hard finding 40 feet of flat surface next to a wall here in Vancouver.  Even the parking garages have sloped floors to help draining.  I might get a small set of lights and modify the brackets to hold them next to the other lights as a fill right in front of the car.  I'll probably wire them up to the high beams so I can flash people as well.
