Marke Joughin, 1706

KK Bride, March 29th 1706
This is affirmed to be the last will and testament 
of Marke Joughin who was of good and perfect memory 
at making the same, first he committed his soul to 
God and body to Christian burial.  
Itm, he said that he had from his uncle William 
Christian in debt money 11s 8d, which said sum he 
was indebted to him, excepting the sess[?] of his 
Estate, which is son John Christian sto[peded] 
with him.  Itm, he said that he hand from Capt 
Wattleworth a firlet of meal corne, and could not 
tell whether he had paid him or not.  
Itm, said that he owed Capt James Christian for 
halfe barrel of salt.  
Itm, said he owed John Woods 14d for a hatchet.  
Itm, to Christopher Quay’s wife 4 d.  
Itm, he said that his sister Kathrine Joughin did 
want of her father’s part of goods, and he bequeathed 
to his said sister for what was due to her a piece 
of land called Crot a Coole and some short [bech] 
adjoining to it northward.  
Itm, he bequeathed to his wife Margtt Joughin an ox.  
Item, he said that he left to Charles Coule that 
part of the Estate in his possession according to 
bargain, and not to be molested or stirred out.  
Itm, he bequeathed to the Parson a mutton, and 
also left to John Kneal 6d.  
Item, he nominated his daugher Margret Joughin 
sole Executrix of all his goods whatsoever, and 
also appointed his wife Margt Joughin & Charles 
Coule overseers over ye said child.  And if in 
case the Child should die he nominated his wife 
Margt Joughin & Charles Coule sole Executors of 
all ye rest of his goods moveable and unmoveable 
whatsoever.

The Executrix being under age, the supervisors 
are sworn in Court in form of Law.

Inventory given in by ye Sumner amounts to, 
ye quick goods included  05:03:06.  
The corbs prized for ye Heir (X, pd ye Heiress 
Isabel Joughin), 00:14:00;     
The Crop to be prized & brought in, which is  0:10:00;    
Other small things  00:01:00;    
Besides wheat, hemp & flax with line stones  00:01:00;      
in ye overseers hand a debt besides 1s pd 
for old lease & due to ye dead  0:02:04-1/2;    
More ye Quick goods, ye dead’s part  2 pounds 10 shillings 2 pence;     
The goods in ye Supervisors hands, who have given 
pledges, Pat: Curlet for Charles, & John Kneale 
for ye widow.

June 11th 1706
John Lace enters his claim against ye Executors 
of Mark Joughin for firlet of malt or barley.        

Wm Xtian enters for 5s 10d &c.        

Catherine Joughin enters her claim against ye 
Executors of Mark Joughin for ye fourth part 
of ye crop, cattle & goods due by ye Will of 
her father John Joughin &c.                      

9 Octr 1707
Wm Lace in behalf of Catherine Joughin, came 
this day to ye Record, & he doe acknowledge to 
have recd ye dead’s part of ye debt due from 
Mark Joughin from ye overseer of his children, 
being ye just sum of twenty five shillings, 
with twelve pence fees and which is in lieu 
of ye moiety of what ye said Catherine Joughin 
...... make to appear in Court. And thereupon 
he acquits ye sd overseer & the children for 
ye sum for ever. As witness his mark to his 
name, William Lace mark W.  
Before us, Charles Watleworth Regr, Philip Crenill.                    

6 April 1708
This day Cha. Cowle & Margt Joughin widow came 
to ye Record, being overseers of Mark Joughin’s 
child, and they have agreed as follows, vizt, 
The said Cha: Cowle doth hereby acquit and 
relinquish all his right & title yt he has or 
may have to ye goods & effects of ye sd Mark 
Joughin if his said child die under age, 
excepting five shillings thereof: Whereby[?] 
ye said Margt obliges herself to maintain ye 
said child xx xxxxxxx xxx she arrive to fourteen 
years, allowing him also 7d xxxx xxx of ye crop 
of corn prized to fifty shillings, & ye 
continuance & possession of ye land he has now 
in Bargain, in ye terms therein expressed till 
ye Child come to lawful years.  And if ye said 
Child die under age, ye aforesaid Margt Joughin 
widow is to enjoy all her goods whatsoever, 
excepting the 5s above mentioned. In witness 
whereof they have to their names put their marks 
the year and day above written,

June 23d 1710
Catherine Joughin came this day and acknowledgeth 
to have received ye other half of ye above debt 
being 25s, and thereupon does acquit Margaret 
Joughin of ye same for ever, as witness her mark 
to her name, Cathrine Joughin’s mark X.                    

1 Decr 1710
Isabel Joughin & her husband have this day received 
ye ... ..... ye corbs & discharged ye Executor

Jan: 11th 1710/11
The Child of Mark Joughin being dead, ye widow has 
given to Charles Cowle ye uncle a dung that was in 
strife betwixt them whereupon ye said Charles has 
acquitted her of ye five shillings considered for 
as beneath written as well for ye muck of ye last 
year in that which the will leave till Michaelmas 
next, as witness their marks Mrgt Joughin’s mark X, 
Char: Cowle’s mark X.
