The last will and testament of Richard Cowley of 
Knockhayn in the parish of KK German, but at 
present residing in Peeltown, being then weak in 
body but was of perfect mind and sound memory at 
the uttering hereof, about the month of December 
1756, did make this his last will and testament 
in manner as follows: 
First, he committed his soul to Almighty God that 
gave it, and his body to the earth and Christian 
burial. 
Item, he left and bequeathed unto his brother 
Thomas Cowley his best suit of clothes. 
Item, he left unto his brother Patrick Cowley one 
shilling legacy. 
Item, he left and bequeathed unto his sister 
Cathrine’s son (Thomas Crellin) his feather bed 
and bed clothes as it stood. 
Item, he declared that he had sent to Margrett 
Cottiman one guinea, and that there was some 
accompts between him and Mrs. Cottiman, and that 
a balance was due him. 
Item, he left the witnesses of this will one 
shilling each. 
And lastly, he nominated and appointed his 
loving brother in law Thomas Crellin whole and 
sole executor of all the rest of his effects 
moveable and immoveable of what kind or nature 
soever, excluding all other craving friends with 
six pence legacy each. 
For witness whereof we have subscribed our names 
and marks this 11th January 1759.

Thomas Costain, 
James Craine. 

At a Court of Correction holden at 
Balla-howin Feb 23rd, 1759, 
the executor is sworn in Court in form of Law and 
hath given pledges for payment of debts and legacies 
namely Hugh Shimmin & John Cowley both of German. 
He is to bring to the Registry a perfect inventory
