35         KK Maughold, 1 Dec 1771
This is affirmed to be the last testament and will of 
JANE COWLE late of KK Bride, being of perfect mind, 
and sound memory at the making hereof.  
Imprimis, She committed her soul to God, and body 
to Christian burial.  
2ndly, She left and bequeathed the whole half of 
a house, garden or backside in the town of Ramsey, 
by her purchased from John Corlet and Ellinor 
Christian to her GRANDNEPHEW WILLIAM COWLE (smith), 
he the said WILLIAM COWLE giving or paying the sum 
of six pounds to each the TWO SONS OF HER NIECE 
ELLINOR CHRISTIAN of Ballatersin, viz., JOHN & 
THOMAS CHRISTIAN.  
And if in case the said WILLIAM COWLE die issueless, 
that then the said house, garden shall fall, and 
descend unto them, the said JOHN & THOMAS CHRISTIAN.  
Also she ordered that the said WILLIAM COWLE smith 
shall pay unto WILLIAM COWLE of Glantruan the sum 
of five shillings annually for ten years after her 
decease.  
3rdly, She left and bequeathed the other half of 
the foresaid house, garden, or backside in said 
town of Ramsey by her enjoyed by was of mortgage, 
unto her GRANDNIECE CATHERINE CHRISTIAN of Ballatersin.  
4thly, She left one guinea & one brown gown, unto 
her NIECE HANNAH CHRISTIAN.  
5thly, She left all the rest of her clothes 
linen and woolen, together with all her pewter 
to her niece ELLINOR CHRISTIAN of Ballatersin.  
6thly, She left one guinea to her YOUNG COUSIN 
HANNAH COWLE of Ballavair.  
7thly, She declared that whatever dealing was 
between her and her COUSIN WILLIAM CHRISTIAN 
of Ballatersin, she left the same unto himself.  
8thly, She left six pence to each the witnesses 
of this will and excluded all claimers with 
6 pence legacy.  
Lastly, she nominated, constituted, ordained, 
and appointed her two COUSINS DOROTHY AND 
CATHERINE CHRISTIAN of Ballatersin sole and 
joint Executrices of all the rest of her worldly effects.

AT A COURT OF CORRECTION HOLDEN at Lezayre 
26th February 1772
The Executrices are sworn in Court in form of Law as 
also to be true and just the one to the other in the 
division of the goods, and have given pledges for the 
payment of debts and legacies, vizt., WILLIAM CHRISTIAN 
of Balterson and EDWARD CALLOW of Ballaskegg.  
Probatum est, Ja:Wilks, Joh:Moore, Thos:Cubbon.           

JANE COWLE HAVING BY HER LAST WILL proved the 
26th of February 1772, among other things bequeathed 
to her young COUSIN HANNAH COWLE of Ballavair a 
legacy of a guinea; and the said HANNAH being 
underage, we ISABLE COWLE HER MOTHER & WILLIAM 
COWLE HER UNCLE and guardian by the father's side 
do acknowledge to have received from the Executors 
of JANE COWLE the said legacy on one guinea, 
& we do hereby acquit, release and discharge 
the executrices of JANE COWLE of said legacy 
of one guinea, as witness our names this 23rd May 1773.

AT KK MAUGHOLD, FEBRUARY 26, 1773: 
JANE COWLE late of KK Bride but of the Parish of 
KK Maughold at the time of her decease, having 
by her last will and testament proved 26th 
February 1772, bequeathed unto her GRANDNEPHEW 
WILLIAM COWLE the whole half of a house and 
garden or backside purchased by her from JOHN 
CORLET & ELLINOR HIS WIFE, in consideration 
of which bequest he the said WILLIAM COWLE is 
to pay the sum of six pounds to each the SONS 
OF HER NIECE ELINOR CHRISTIAN OF BALTERSON vizt., 
JOHN & THOMAS CHRISTIAN, 
Ordered therefore that the said WILLIAM COWLE 
do pay the said sum of six pounds each bequeathed 
unto JOHN & THOMAS CHRISTIAN unto WILLIAM CHRISTIAN 
of Balterson THEIR FATHER, who has given pledges 
that the said sums of six pounds each shall be 
forth coming for the use of his said children, 
namely Edward Callow OF BALLASKEG & William 
Callow of KK Maughold, within fourteen days 
after the date hereof.  
Otherwise if he refuse or neglect to pay the 
same he is to be committed until he submits 
to Law and pays all fees.  
To the Sumner of KK Maughold who if disobeyed 
to apply for a Constable.

AT KK MAUGHOLD, MARCH 10TH, 1773: 
CHRISTOPHER COWLE of Ballevear in the Parish 
of KK Bride, having by his last will and 
testament proved 11th February 1754, among 
other things bequeathed the Carragh which he 
lately purchased to the HEIR of Ballevear, 
and the same to fall and descend in the nature 
of inheritance (after the decease of his 
Executrix), the said HEIR paying the sum of 
twenty pounds to the Executrices of his 
DAUGHTER JANE COWLE; 
And the said JANE COWLE Exectrix of 
CHRISTOPHER COWLE aforesaid having by her 
last will and testament proved the 26th 
February 1772, appointed her two COUSINS 
DOROTHY & CATHARINE CHRISTIAN of Ballaterson 
her sole and joint Executrices; 
They the said DOROTHY & CATHARINE CHRISTIAN 
Executrices of JANE COWLE aforesaid charged 
ISABEL COWLE MOTHER and guardian of THOMAS 
COWLE THE HEIR of Ballevear (he being underage) 
together with WILLIAM COWLE HIS guardian & 
UNCLE by the father's side before me for 
recovery of said legacy of twenty pounds, 
appointed by CHRISTOPHER COWLE aforesaid to 
be paid by the HEIR of Ballevear to the 
Executrices of HIS DAUGHTER JANE COWLE, 
Ordered therefore that ISABEL COWLE & WILLIAM 
COWLE aforesaid the guardians of THOMAS COWLE 
THE HEIR of Ballevear do within fourteen 
days after the date hereof, pay unto DOROTHY 
& CATHARINE CHRISTIAN the Executrices of 
JANE COWLE, the said sum of twenty pounds, 
otherwise if they refuse or neglect to pay 
the same they are to be committed until 
they submit to Law and pay all fees.  
To the Sumners of KK Bride & Maughold who 
if disobeyed &c.

DECEMBER 29TH 1775: 
I JOHN CHRISTIAN HUSBAND OF HANNAH CHRISTIAN 
do hereby acknowledge to have received the 
sum of one guinea and a brown gown, the same 
being a legacy bequeathed my foresaid wife 
HANNAH CHRISTIAN by the last will and 
testament of JANE COWLE, and I do hereby 
acquit release & discharge the Executrices 
of said JANE COWLE, their Executors, 
Administrators or Assigns of said legacy as 
witness my mark to my name the day and date 
above written.

WHEREAS JANE COWLE DID BY HER LAST WILL 
and testament bequeath the whole half of 
a house & garden or backside in the town 
of Ramsey to her GRANDNEPHEW COWLE, the 
said WILLIAM COWLE paying the sum of six 
pounds to each the sons of her NIECE 
ELINOR CHRISTIAN of Ballaterson, vizt., 
JOHN & THOMAS CHRISTIAN, and whereas 
JOHN CHRISTIAN departed this life some 
time ago & appointed his BROTHER THOMAS 
CHRISTIAN his Executor; I therefore the 
said THOMAS CHRISTIAN do hereby acknowledge 
to have received the sum of twelve pounds 
from WILLIAM COWLE aforesaid, the same 
being the legacy's of six pounds each 
bequeathed unto my BROTHER JOHN and myself 
and payable by the said WILLIAM COWLE, 
and I do hereby acquit, release, exonerate 
and discharge the said WILLIAM COWLE, 
his executors and administrators from 
all claims and demands for or on account 
of the said legacies of six pounds each 
bequeathed unto my BROTHER JOHN and myself, 
as witness my hand this 28th December 1796.
