To the Reverend Thomas Cubbon
and Nicholas Christian Vicars ~
General of the Diocese of Sodor and Man
The humble petition of John
Corteen of Thallow Queen in the
Parish of Maughold ~
Sheweth / That Catherine Corteen of the said Parish
who was the wife of your Pet'r departed
this life on or about the Month of December
in the year of our Lord 1806 intestate or as
your Pet is given to understand having first
expressed some words purporting to be her
last Will and Testament which words
were some time afterwards committed to writing
by the Witnesses present and were designed to be her
last Will and Testament and to be considered
and taken as such. ~
That your Pet. has good reason to
apprehend and believe that the s'd paper
writing is on certain grounds invalid and
cannot be sustained or deemed as valid in
the eye or notice of the Law as your Pet. trusts
may be made to appear. ~
That none of the persons interested in the
establishment of the said paper writing as a
Will have taken any Steps or adopted any
legal measures for the establishment of the
same as and for the Will of the said Catherine
Corteen notwithstanding the length of time
which has since elapsed since the decease of
the said Catherine Corteen. ~
That your Pet. has experienced much
inconvenience by reason of no representatives
Executor or administrator having been sworn on
the Estate of the said Catherine Corteen and that
the said Estate required that some proper person
or persons should be appointed and sworn Ex'or
or [Adm'or] of the same. ~
That your Pet. would further state that
your Pet is not inclined to take upon him the
burden of the said intended or pretended will
of the said Catherine Corteen and that the same
ought to be set aside as null and void. ~
Wherefore our Pet. humbly prays a
speedy hearing of this petition and
authority to summon the children or
collaterals of the said deceased, and that
upon oyer of the said paper writing and
consideration of the matters beforestated
your Reverences may be pleased to grant
administration of the Estate of the said
Catherine Corteen unto your Pet. or grant
your Pet. such other relief in the Premise
As to your Reverences may [soon] meet
And your Pet. will ever [pray]
