This is the last will and testament of me Edward Forbes of the town of
Douglas in the Isle of Man and published by me the 24th day of June in
the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred nine.
First I commend my body to the Most Gracious God who give it me. And
my wish is to be buried with decent Christian burial.
Next is that my son Edwards should take possession of all my property in
lands, houses, chattels, and or in trust for himself and all his brothers
and sisters. And he is to account with them for the property as follows:
It is my will that he shall account with each of his four sisters out of
the property pay nine hundred pounds each Emma, Alicia, Catharine, and Mary
Anne the conditions as follows:
First it is my request as long as they live happy and comfortable
together with their brother Edward. He is to also each of them that is at
age - sixteen pounds British a year to find themselves in close(clothes)
and pocket money and that money to be paid into the hands of there
sister Emma and she to lay it out to the most frugal way for there
advantages.
But if it should so happen that my son Edward should marry and the
cannot then live happy together, in that case, he is to build them a house
adjoining my own dwelling house if not built by myself before January he
is to furnish the same in a gentle style or to assign to them the new
dwelling house and adjoining Mr Matt Simpson's house my own garden property
furnished as it now is. My daughter Emma to have the charge
and management of the house and trust if she should marry must quit the
house she is in that care to give charge of the house to the next sister
unmarried with the consent of their brother Edward and the younger brother
is alway to find a home with them if required portioning them in pertains of
the house. He is then to allow them five per cent interest for their money
say forty five pounds a year each for there money until paid but the money
not to be called for until marriage and then to be paid for
in installments as may be convenient for their brother to take the money out
of business say one part at twelve months and two years three year after
proper ----- is giving and ---- if either of his sisters should get married,
agreeable to his wish and consent, he is to pay her by or before the day of
marriage twenty five pounds British her out in ------------------------
It is also my will that if either of the sisters should die before them
married that the fortune left her shall be equally divided among the
other surviving sisters share and share alike and at my death he is to
find all my children with proper sharing free of any demand against
them.
I also now will unto my other five younger sons say Robert, George,
David, Savory, and William three hundred pounds British each ---- all
advances made by me during my life time and this money not to be paid until
they come to the age of twenty one years and then if my son Edward cannot
conveniently take the money out of business he is to allow them 5 per cent
interest for their money until paid. As to the children under age he is to
provide for them in his own house until they come of age or
other ways provided for. And if apprentice fee is wanted he is to pay it
out of my property. And for a ------ security of the same I make my
dwelling house furniture, stable, garden the new house in Church Street
ajoining Mr Simpson, and all my herring houses, sheds, and on the New
Kay accountable for these legacies or settlements and on further request of
my friends Mrs Edward Moore and Mrs William Stowell ---------- it
see justice done to the children if they should be applyed to but hope
these will be no cause if compliant from my son Edward.
I further observe that if any of my sons should die before they come to age
of fourteen is to be equally divided between the surviving brothers share
and share a like.
And the sum of six pence to any person claiming any right to in ------ or
sett aside this will in being of such pretensions and I appoint my son
Edward guardian and executor in trust for all my children as witness my hand
the twenty fourth day of June 1809. Edward Forbes.
