                 Lonan   5

By the Mercy of God I John Gelling of the 
Parish of KK Lonan being weak of Body but 
of perfect mind and memory thanks be to 
God.  Therefore calling unto mind the 
mortality of my body and knowing that it is 
appointed that all men must Die and 
in order to prevent any dispute after 
my Decease do make and ordain this my 
last will and testament  first I commit 
my Soul to God through my kind Redeem
er and my Body I recommend to the Earth 
to be Buried in a decent Christian 
Burial at the discretion of my Executrix 
and as to my worldly goods and effects I 
dispose them in the following manner 
and form 

I leave and bequeath to my Son John 
Gelling the sum of four pounds as legacy.
I leave and bequeath to my Son William 
Gelling the sum of four pounds as legacy.
I leave and bequeath to my Daughter 
Margaret wife of Matthias Callow the sum 
of four pounds as legacy.

I leave and bequeath to my Daughter Jane 
wife of Thomas Scarff the sum of four 
pounds as legacy and the whole of the 
fore said Legacyes to be paid after the death 
of my Executrix and I leave and bequeath 
unto My Beloved wife the whole of my 
Houses and lands in Glen Gawne in the said 
parish to enjoy the same during her natural 
life and no longer.
and I also leave one shilling to any person 
or persons that may Claim a just right 
in my effects here after.
And Lastly I nominate and appoint my 
beloved wife Margaret Gelling whole and 
sole Executrix of all the rest of my effects 
goods and chattles moveable and immoveable 
of what ever kind or nature soever and 
I do acknowledge this and no other to be my 
last will and testament.  Witness my 
subscription this the sixteenth day of November 
one thousand eight hundred and forty seven.

	        At a Chapter Court holden at Douglas
	         the 23rd May 1848 ---
T.W. Kerruish and Wm Corkill the subscribing witnesses to 
the execution of the foregoing paper writing purporting to be 
the last will and testament of John Gelling of Kirk 
Lonan deceased.  Having made Oath on the Holy Evangelist 
that the said John Gelling when of sound and disposing 
mind memory and understanding duly executed the 
same as and for his last Will and Testament in their 
presence.  Margaret Gelling the Executrix in said Will 
named is therefore sworn well and truly to fulfil 
                    according to Law
and execute the said will ^.  to pay all just debts legacies 
and funeral expenses of the Testator so far forth as the 
Goods and Effects will extend and the Law bind her.  
and to return to the Archdeacon’s Registry a full true 
and perfect Inventory of the said Estate with an 
accurate account of her Acts and proceedings in 
the premises when thereunto Lawfully required.  
And to these ends she hath given pledges namely 
John Gelling of Glen Gawne and Thomas Scarff of 
Barroose both in the parish of Lonan, who have 
executed the usual Bond in presence of the Court.

WHEREAS the Ecclesiastical Court of this Diocese hath this day
granted Probate of the last Will & Testament 
             of John Gelling late 
of KK Lonan deceased, to Margt Gelling the 
executrix therein named

AND WHEREAS  John Gelling of Glen Gawne 
in the Parish of Lonan and Thos Scarff 
of Barroose in the Parish of KK Lonan 
have agreed to become pledges to the said Margt Gelling

Therefore, KNOW ALL MEN by these Presents, the We, the said John 
Gelling and Thos Scarff hereby bind and 
oblige ourselves, and other Executors, and Administrators, as Pledges to the said 
Margt Gelling for the due and faithful Administration 
of the Goods and Effects of the said Deceased, according to Law.  Witness our
Subscriptions, this 23d Day of May 1848.
