This is the last will and testament of John Brew of Ramsey in the parish
of Kirk Maughold in the Isle of Man and of Alice his wife conjointly and
severally made and dated the day and date underwritten.
In the first place the said John Brew and Alice his wife do will and
direct the whole of the estate whether real or personal which may be in
their possession at the time of the decease of either of them shall and may
be enjoyed by the survivor of them for and during the full end and term of
his or her natural life and that at the time of the decease of the one or
the other of them then a full and perfect inventory and valuation shall be
made of all and singular such estate and effects which said inventory shall
be again produced at the time of the decease of the survivor of them in
order that no undue advantage shall be taken by the survivor during the time
of his or her tenancy thereof and then and immediately after the decease of
the aforesaid survivor of them then
and at that time this conjoint will of the said John and Alice Brew shall
take effect in manner following.
First We give and devise to our daughter Catherine Brew the house and
premises we recently purchased situated in Kirk Maughold Street in the town
of Ramsey aforesaid and commonly called "John Sayles House" and formerly the
property of Isabella Sayle for her own absolute use and benefit we also give
to our said daughter Catherine Brew all and singular the rents profits and
emoluments that may arise from the house
adjoining the one we now occupy and which is now in the occupation of
Mrs Summers for and during the full end and term of eight years from the day
of the date of the decease of the aforesaid survivor of us for her own
absolute use and benefit. We also give to our said daughter the sum of one
pound to be paid to her by our executors hereafter named immediately after
our decease.
Further we give to our said daughter Catherine Brew the whole of our
household furniture as it may stand at the time of the decease of the
survivor of us saving and excepting what articles may be hereinafter named
for her own use and benefit.
Furthermore our joint will is that within twelve calendar months from
the day of the decease of the survivor of us the testators before named our
executors do and shall faithfully pay or cause to be paid unto our daughter
Christian Holden unto our daughter Mary Anderson and unto our daughter
Margaret Travis respectively and to each the sum of thirty pounds in good
and lawful money for each of their respective uses and benefits. To our
daughter Elizabeth Proudfoot we give the sum of three pounds to our son
William Brew the like sum of three pounds to our daughter Ann Sayle the like
sum of three pounds and our second best feather bed which three last named
bequests we wish paid and satisfied
as soon as conveniently may be after our decease.
Again we jointly give and devise to our son John Brew the house and premises
we now occupy together with the house and premises adjoining situate and
being in Ballure Road in the town of Ramsey aforesaid and which said
adjoining premises are now in the occupation of Mrs Summers for his own
absolute use and benefit subject nevertheless to the
provision in behalf of our aforesaid daughter Catherine Brew and herein
before named. We also give to our said son John Brew our Family Bible
our clock and one set of chest of drawers now forming a part of our
household furniture.
We also give to our aforesaid son John Brew that is to say place in his
hands all and singular our book debts, ready money, securities for money
that there may be in our possession at the time of the decease of the
survivor of us subject to the bequests herein before named and also that out
of such amounts he our said son John shall together with our executors
hereinafter named pay and satisfy all our just debts funeral expenses and
whatever charges may arise in recording or registering
this our last will and testament in the court proper for such matters and
then when all and each of the aforesaid bequests legacies debts and expenses
are all fully paid and satisfied should there be any surplus
arising from such book debts ready money or securities for money we
will and direct that such surplus shall be by our joint executors equally
and fairly divided amongst our legatees before named saving and
excepting our aforesaid daughter Elisabeth Proudfoot and our son
William Brew.
And Lastly I John Brew aforesaid do on my part nominate constitute and
appoint my friend James Corlett and my son John Brew executors to this my
last will and also I Alice Brew do on my part nominated and appoint
my friend Charles Walworth and my daughter Catherine Brew executor
and executrix to this my last will and we the aforesaid John Brew and
Alice Brew do hereby jointly revoke and make void all former will or
wills by us at any time before made and do declare this alone to be our
last in witness whereof we the said testators have set and subscribed
our respective hands and seals this Third day of April One thousand eight
hundred and forty nine.

Signed sealed and delivered by the aforesaid testators in the present of
B B Arnold and James Corlett.
In consideration of my son John Brew taking administration of the estate of
my late husband John Brew deceased with his will annexed I hereby ratify and
confirm the devise of the properties made to him by his father and me and
that he shall enjoy the whole of the said properties in strict accordance
with the devise in the said will. As witness my name this
19th July 1849.

I hereby renounce the executorship of the foregoing will to and in favor
of John Brew Junior the other executor therein named as witness my

At a Chapter Court holden at Ramsey the 9th day of November 1849. James
Corlett one of the subscribing witnesses to the foregoing paper writing
purporting to be the last will and testament of John Brew late of Ramsey
deceased. Having sound and disposing mind memory and understanding duly
executed the same in presence of deponent and of B.
B. Arnold the other subscribing witness as and for his last will and
testament, John Brew one of the executors appointed by said deceadent the
other executor having renounced is thereupon sworn well and truly to fulfil
and execute said will according to law, to pay all just debts,
legacies and funeral expenses of the testator so far forth as the goods and
effects will extend and the law bind him, and to return to the
Episcopal Registry a full true and perfect inventory of said estate with
an accurate account of his acts and proceedings in the premises when
thereunto lawfully required, and to these ends he hath given pledges
James Corlett and Charles Kissack who have executed a bond to that effect
bearing equal date herewith.

Feb 1865.
Robert Cowle and Mary Cowle alias Anderson alias Brew received23 Feb 1865 30
pounds twelve shillings and six pence in full
Catherine Brew received from her brother John Brew one pound 23 Feb 1865.
Willliam Sayle and Ann Sayle alias Brew his wife received from John
Brew 3 pounds and a feather bed on 9 Mar 1865.
Christen Holden alias Brew received 31 December 1866 thirty pounds twelve
shillings and six pence in full.
