The humble petition of Elizabeth Halsale of the town of Douglas Widow.

Sheweth:
That Patience Elizabeth Christian of the said Town of Douglas lately 
departed this life, having first duly made and published her Last Will 
and Testament whereof she appointed your petitioner Executrix.
That petitioner is […] to obtain probate of the said will.
Wherefore petitioner humbly prays a hearing hereof and that your 
Worship may be pleased to grant probate of the said Will to your petitioner […]

Ordered that the petitioner do come or to be heard at an Ecclesiastical Court 
to be holden at Douglas this day whereof all parties are and have due notice. 
This 26 November 1863.


At a Ecclesiastical Court held at Douglas the 26 Nov 1863

Elizabeth Halsale is duly sworn Executrix of the Estate of the within named Patience Elizabeth Christian.

Diocese of Sodor and Man

Whereas the Ecclesiastical Court of this Diocese hath this day granted probate of the Will 
of Patience Elizabeth Christian of the Town of Douglas deceased, to Elizabeth Halsale of 
the said Town, widow.
And Whereas William Cowley of Douglas In the Parish of Braddan and James Halsale of Douglas 
in the Parish of Braddan have agreed to become pledges for the said Elizabeth Halsale for 
the due administration of the said Estate according to law.
Therefore know all men by all these Presents, that we, the said William Cowley and James Halsale 
hereby bind and oblige ourselves and our Executors and Administrators, as pledges for the 
said Elizabeth Halsale for the due and faithful administration of the goods and effects of 
the said deceased according to law. And in her default we bind ourselves and our Executors 
and Administrators to be answerable to all parties interested in the said Estate, or the 
Administration thereof.
Witness our Subscriptions this Twenty Sixth day of November 1863 at an Eccl Court held at 
Douglas the 26 day of Novr 1863.

I Patience Elizabeth Christian of Douglas Widow of the late John Christian of the […] 
Moar in the parish of Malew, being sick and weak in body, but of sound […] 
mind, memory and understanding and being minded to avoid disputes which might 
arise after my decease, […] 
to the disposal of my worldly property Do make and ordain this my Last Will and 
Testament in form and manner as follows, Vizt:

First and principally I commit my soul unto the hands of Almighty God who gave it 
and my body I commend to the dust from which it was taken to be interred in decent Christian burial.

Item. I leave and bequeath my daughter Margaret Kaighin wife of Charles Kaighin five Shillings as Legacy.

Item, I leave and bequeath unto my son Edward Christian five Shillings as legacy.

Item. I leave and bequeath unto my son Stephen Christian five Shillings as Legacy.

Lastly, I nominate, constitute and appoint my daughter Elizabeth Halsale wife of 
Edward Halsale of the Town of Douglas [whole] and sole Executrix of this my Last 
Will and Testament unto whom also I leave and bequeath all the rest of my worldly 
property, such as houses[?], goods, chattels and of […] moveable and immovable of 
what kind or nature soever, to be possessed and enjoyed by her as her own […] 
debarring and excluding all other claimants with one Shilling each as legacy.


As witness my subscription or mark to my name this 29th day of April 1863

At an Ecclesiastical Court holden at Douglas on the 26 day of November 1863 ­ 
Robert Gell and William Cowley the subscribing witnesses to the […] 
paper writing pertaining to the Last Will and Testament of Patience Elizabeth Christian 
the Testatrix made unto the Holy Evangelists thus. The Testatrix when of sound mind 
memory and understanding duly signed the same […] and for her Last Will and Testament […] 
the […] and […] having been first duly made in their presence by the Testatrix, 
Elizabeth Halsale the Executrix named as the said […] and execute the same according to 
Law by paying the just debts and funeral expenses of the Testatrix and the Legacies […] 
as the goods and effects of the Testatrix was executed accord the law[…] a true and 
faithful inventory thereof with an accurate account of the […] Ecclesiastical Registry 
of this Diocese where [lawfully required and these […] she hath given pledges namely 
William Cowley of Douglas in the parish of Braddan and James Halsale of Douglas in the 
said parish who have duly entered into and executed the usual bond in the presence of 
the Court. Probatum Est.
