Lesley Benham BA, BEd, RAD Diploma

 

Lesley Benham has been teaching dance in Delta for 20 years and is celebrating her 10th year as director and owner of Deas Island Dance. Lesley teaches her classes with kindness and professionalism, attentive to both the physical and emotional well being of her students, and motivating her students to strive for their best of their ability.

Lesley's own dance training and performing includes a vast array of dance forms including RAD and ISTD Classical Ballet, Jazz, Modern, National, Musical Theatre and Flamenco. Most recently, Lesley returned from a summer intensive program at the Alvin Ailey School in New York where she studied Horton modern dance technique.

Balancing her education in both dance and academics, Lesley has received Arts and Education degrees from the University of British Columbia. Upon graduation from post secondary education, Lesley completed her Royal Academy of Dance (RAD) Teachers Certification with Distinction and her RAD Teaching Diploma with Anatomy and Child Psychology. She has continued her professional development with yearly vocational and children's dance pedagogy courses with the RAD and for the past three years, Lesley has acted as a mentor and supervisor to new teachers enrolled in RAD CBTS teachers program.

 


Caroline Birch

 

Caroline Birch is the Administrator for Deas Island Dance. She has worked in Dance Administration for over 18 years and is friendly and approachable while also being thorough and well organized. Caroline is available to answer any questions relating to Deas Island Dance.

 

Moe Moe Brody

 

With over 25 years dance experience, Moe Brody has continued to entertain many with her hip hop, jazz and tap innovations. Prior to returning to her passion, dance, as her chosen career, Moe attended the University of British Columbia successfully earning her degree in Human Kinetics.

Moe’s return to dance commenced with a season as one of the NBA Grizzlies Extreme Dance Team members. During this period, she performed at numerous live and televised events including the official opening for Planet Hollywood with Bruce Willis, Will Smith and Arnold Schwatzenegger. She has also choreographed for the CFL and The University of BC dance team.Her most recent projects have been filming “John Tucker Must Die” with Grammy winner Ashanti and Jesse Metcalf from Desperate Housewives. Also filmed Dr.Dolittle 3, both now on DVD. She just finished shooting a movie with Hayden Panettiere called I Love You Beth Cooper.

Moe has successfully proven her innate capability to choreograph or dance, on repeat basis, in commercials for such reputable companies as McDonalds, Barbie/Matel, Kyocera, Coca-Cola and Disney. Throughout her career, her winning personality and choreographic talents have landed her many interviews on radio and TV as well as several performances for MTV, Smallville, Crash Test Mommies and X-Weighted.

Currently Moe can be found teaching at a professional dance studio, Harbour Dance, in downtown Vancouver. She is also on faculty with The Source, Danzemode, DanceFusion and Groovestreet Productions. As if not busy enough, Moe is also an established full time choreographer for season release shows for Roxy, Quiksilver, and Westbeach. As an adjudicator at dance competitions, she derives much satisfaction dispensing helpful advice which she hopes will inspire future dancers.

 

Alexandra Clancy

 

Miss Alex has a passion for tap and takes every opportunity to learn from the masters at dance workshops such as the annual Vancouver Tap Dance Festival. Miss Alex also trains in ballet, jazz, lyrical, stage and modern and is a member of the Tapco performing group which performs at venues such as Vancouver Children’s Festival. Alex is off to tap in Chicago this summer and looks forward to being back in fall to share her tap skills with the students.

 


Janet Gittens RAD Diploma

 

Janet Gittens is a highly experienced dance instructor. She has been teaching for over twenty five years and holds The Royal Academy of Dance Teaching Diploma with Anatomy and Child Psychology and Development and the Advanced Diploma in Benesh Movement Notation.

Janet taught ballet at the Benesh Institute and Ballet Rambert (London, England) and also owned and operated her dance studio for 17 years in Trinidad and Tobago.

Janet continues to assist her students to reach their ultimate goals through her coaching and encouraging. She has been involved with preparations for the Solo Seal examinations of the Royal Academy of Dance, The Genee International Competition (London, England), Prix de Lausanne (Switzerland), the award of scholarships, and placement in international dance schools and companies.

 


Jamie Gonzales

 

Jamie has been dancing since she was 3 years old and has training in ballet, jazz and lyrical jazz, modern, hip hop and tap. After graduating from Deas Island Dance, Jamie has continued her dance studies at Calgary's Decidedly Jazz Danceworks summer programs, The Edge in L.A., Harbour Dance Centre, and she has also attended many conventions including Groove Street Productions. Also, Jamie spent two years studying and performing with the Source Dance Company in Vancouver under the director Joanne Pesusich. Jamie's is excited to be entering her sixth year of teaching Jazz and Hip Hop with Deas Island Dance.

 

  Anton Lim

 

Anton started tapping as a wee 4 year old, and hasn’t stopped dancing since. A recent graduate of McGill University, he trained for 4 years with Mosaica, the McGill Dance Company, in tap, hip hop, jazz, lyrical, and contemporary. A Theatre Under the Stars alumnus, he brings a keen awareness of performance and nuanced expression to the studio. His further experience as a senior teaching assistant at McGill has also afforded him expertise as an instructor and mentor. Anton is thrilled to join the faculty at Deas Island Dance.

 

  Angela Lowndes

 

Angela was born in Costa Rica and has studied dance all over the World. She is a choreographer, Dancer, Teacher, and Singer. Her technique ranges in many different styles such as Old Skool, New Skool, Locking, Popping, Street Jazz, Jazz and Ballet. Her many credits include Moka Only, Rascalz, MTV Canada, MTV US, Much Music and many more. Her Dance crew, Grandmaster C and the Funky 5+1 are the recent Hip Hop Champions in the West Coast of Canada. The group traveled to Los Angeles this summer to represent Canada in the World Hip Hop Championships.

 

morgan  Morgan McQueen

    

 Morgan McQueen is a talented individual who has been emersed within the dance world since the young age of three. Through her training, she has excelled in styles such as Tap, Jazz, Ballet, Hip Hop, Musical Theatre and Lyrical. Morgan has achieved a variety of dance accomplishments throughout her life. A highlighted few include the popular teen comedy, “John Tucker Must Die”, featuring Ashanti and Jesse Metcalf. Morgan was fortunate to have the opportunity to work on set with the stars and dance in smaller roles throughout the film. Other exciting events Morgan has been involved in include, dancing as a BC Lions’ Felion for three years, being a part of the Vancouver Giants’ dance team for four years and dancing aboard Carnival Cruise Lines.
Aside from the many dance opportunities Morgan has been involved in, she was also asked to be a part of the 2005 Canadian National Tap Team at the World Tap Championship which took place in Reisa, Germany. Morgan was extremely successful in her endeavors at the competition, placing seventh overall in the Women’s solo tap category and second place in the group category.
On top of Morgan’s evolving dance career, she takes time to stay true to her love of dance by teaching at various dance studios. Morgan has had the opportunity to train at elite dance establishments in areas such as Los Angeles, New York City, Las Vegas and Vancouver. Morgan’s passion for dancing is evident in her many successes as a dancer and as a teacher. She now wants to pass on to her students everything she has learned throughout her years of training, and prepare those who might consider dance to be their profession one day. 

 

Lisa Metz

 

Lisa Metz is a talented choreographer and an energetic teacher. Lisa has trained in Tap and Jazz (Adapt syllabus), RAD Ballet, Lyrical, Modern, Hip Hop, Acro and Steet Jazz - making her a versatile dancer, performer and instructor. She is currently studying contemporary dance with Tiffany Tregarthen’s company, Modus Operandi, as well as studying popping, locking, house, and breakin' with the Electric Boogaloos. Lisa has danced with many talented dancers and choreographers including the all girls hip hop group Velocity, the Seattle based dance group Phyzical Graffi-t, and a year with The Source Dance Company. Lisa is currently teaching tap, lyrical, jazz, hip hop and festival choreography at Deas Island Dance.

 

Katie Parks RAD Diploma

 

Katie Parks is an enthusiastic and fun loving teacher, brings over 30 years experience in the field of dance and holds the following credentials. Katie is a registered teacher of the Royal Academy of Dancing (RAD) receiving Distinction on her Teaching Certificate examination. She received her RAD Teaching Diploma in Anatomy, Dance History and Child Psychology and Development.

Katie also attended dance teacher programs at both the Grant McEwan College and Ryerson Polytechnic University and she owned and operated dance studios in Jasper, Alberta and South Delta. Katie has recently completed her Special Education Assistant Certification and currently teaches in the Delta School District.

 

heather price Heather Price

 

Heather began her ballet training at the age of 4 under the Cecchetti Method, and continued on with the RAD after the age of 8, successfully completing the Advanced 2 exam in 2009. Heather has been teaching Ballet and various other dance forms, including Modern, Jazz, and Tap, since 2002, and has recently completed the RAD’s Certificate in Ballet Teaching Studies program, which grants her fully registered teachers status. Heather spent 3 years in London Ontario teaching, training, and performing while attending university. She had the privilege to train with Dale Yoshida, a former principal dancer with the Royal Winnipeg Ballet, and is also currently enrolled in the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences at UBC.

 

Krista Krista Savage RAD RTS, B.Sc.(Hon)FNH

 

Krista Savage has studied at the National Ballet School of Canada, Royal Winnipeg Ballet School, Banff Centre for the Arts, and Montreal’s L’Ecole Superieure de Danse du Quebec. While living in Montreal, she worked with company members of Les Grands Ballets Canadiens, and studied daily with Alexandra Wells, former principal dancer of Boston Ballet. Krista also obtained a Bachelor of Science Honours Degree in Food, Nutrition, and Health from The University of British Columbia, and, with a special interest in wellness and injury prevention, has conducted seminars on nutrition for dancers Krista holds her Teaching Certificate and Registered Teacher Status with the Royal Academy of Dance. She has a true passion for ballet, and loves sharing this passion with her students!

 

Jenny.Stewart Jenny Stewart

 

Jenny has danced across Canada and the US with companies like Dance Nouveau, Pro Troupe and Legends Alive! and has worked with many influential and inspiring professional dancers. Jenny has choreographed for fitness pageants and fashion shows and was also proud to assist with the choreography for the World Track and Field Championships in Edmonton. Originally a prairie girl from Alberta, Jenny moved to Vancouver in 2002 to pursue a career as a performer. She has been seen in various live shows like Guys & Dolls, Godspell, West Side Story, Music Man, Crazy for You, Mack & Mabel, Lost Vegas Live!, Fosse, Fosse, Fosse and the opening program for the Jessie Richardson Theatre Awards. Her recent Film & TV credits include “John Tucker Must Die”, “Dr Doolittle 3”, “Two for the Money”, commercials for Coke and Global, and appearances on Urban Rush and MTV Canada. Most recently Jenny traveled the Mexican Riviera dancing for Carnival Cruise Lines and currently she works as a special needs aide in a private school and a dance instructor for children and adults.

 

Bronwen Bronwen Wilson RAD RTS, Post Grad Teaching Dip.

 

Bronwen Wilson has been teaching dance for 10 years in New Zealand. She has completed a Bachelor of Dance and as well as the RAD Teaching Diploma. Bronwen also holds a post graduate teaching diploma which qualifies her as a high school teacher. Bronwen is passionate about dance and in particular about teaching musical theatre. She has taught at several tertiary institutions in New Zealand as well as for many private studios. Additionally, she has performed in many shows including a solo performance for the Prime Minister of New Zealand. Bronwen continues to dance in Vancouver and to perform in musicals. Bronwen has become a regular face at Deas Island, teaching at our summer intensives, choreographing for our Disney performances and preparing students for festival routines.
