We invite all studio dancers aged 3 and up to our studio party. The party will be loads of fun with dancing, games and merriment!
Dress up in your favorite Christmas outfit, costume or simply wear red and green.

You do not need to bring anything for the party but if you wish to donate we will be collecting for the food bank. A box will be at the bottom of the stairs if you wish to bring a donation of canned food.

Students aged 11 and up who are willing to volunteer please sign up on the studio bulletin board. You will need to arrive before (at 1:40 to help little ones up stairs), lead games and stay until 4:20 to help take little ones find shoes and take them downstairs please sign up on the studio bulletin board.

Parents are asked to drop the students at the downstairs door and return at the end of the party (sorry parents and siblings can’t stay because it gets too crowded!).
Parents of little ones please know that there will be lots of our teen dancers to help with child care. We look forward to seeing you there.

LOST AND FOUND

All the studio lost and found will be on display over the next week in the yellow studio from Tuesday December 11th to Sunday December 16th.

This includes the vast amount of DANCE SHOES that are overflowing.
After December 17th we will be taking all lost and found to good will.

Also one of our Wednesday night students is missing her blue outdoor coat from Mountain Equipment Coop (see posted sign). If you have accidentally picked up

Dear Studio Families:

Studio News
I hope this email finds everyone well! We have some wonderful news to share with all of you. First our office administrator Caroline Birch became a first time grandmother yesterday to a beautiful baby boy named Nathan. Congratulations to her daughter Shannon (who also happens to be the Deas Island Dance webdesigner) and her husband Grant!

Also some terrific news regarding Miss Janet’s daughter, Celine Gittens, who is currently dancing for the Royal Ballet in Birmingham, England. It was announced today that Celine will be dancing the lead role of Odette/Odile in Swan Lake in the company’s production in February. This is only Celine’s second year with the company so to receive this coveted role is very exciting.

Hope this email finds all of you well,

Kind regards,

Lesley Benham
Director
Deas Island Dance

Deas Island Dance - October 2007 Newsletter

We have had a terrific first month back at dance and would like to thank all the students for their hard work and enthusiasm thus far. Thank you to all parents for getting students to class on time with hair and outfits ready to go. We appreciate your efforts!

We ask that you do not ask teachers questions between classes. If you have any questions please leave a message for Caroline, our studio administrator, on the studio phone at 604-946-5867.

Thanks, everyone and happy dancing.

Adult Tap
We are beginning a 10 week adult tap program on Wednesdays 9:30 -10:30am. Please phone Caroline for information or to register.

Kinderjazz
We have started a jazz class on Thursday afternoons 1:45-2:30 for Kindergarten students. We are hoping to spread the word to keep this class running! If you know of any 5 year olds looking to dance please let them know of this class. Thank you!

Year End Show
The studio calendar can be found on studio handbook on our studio website – including the dates of our year end show (June 6, 7 and 8)

Cloud 9 DVDs
If you ordered an Alice in Wonderland DVD, you should have now received your copy in the mail. If you do not yet have your copy please contact Doug or Leanne McLeod from Cloud 9 video at 604-929-5387

Student Pick Up
Please remember that the teachers are running back-to-back classes and are only able to supervise students when they are in the classroom. Parents are responsible for their children before and after class.

We understand that emergencies arise. Therefore, we would like to ask parents to discuss the following with their son or daughter. Students are asked to wait inside the studio for their ride. Also, if a parent/ride does not turn up…please have your son or daughter knock on one of the studio doors and let a teacher know. Students may sit quietly inside the classroom door and watch the next class. If no one comes for a student, a teacher will phone home.

Girls Hair for Class
It is imperative that each student’s hair is done correctly for class. Too many students are arriving with hair in their eyes or hair down. For ballet/modern hair should be in a classical bun and for tap/jazz/hip hop hair should be in a bun or a neat pony tail. Please use a strong elastic for a base and use flat clips to pin back any bangs or wispy bits.

Hip Hop Runners and other Dance Shoes
Students are reminded that they must have non-marking soled, inside only, runners for hip hop class. This means that student must change into their dance shoes once they reach the studio lobby.
At no time should any dance shoes be worn in the parking lot or outside. Thank you!

Care of Pink Organza Ballet Skirts
If you need to clean your organza skirt please hand wash – dip it in warm water with gentle detergent. If you have stain – gently rub, rinse and hang to dry. Do not bleach, iron or put them in the dryer.

Email Address
If you need to change your email address with us, or add an additional email address to our mailing list, simply reply to this email and let us know.

Dear Studio Families

Just a few notes for you as the dance season approaches! It has been terrific to see many of the students back at dance during our August summer programs.

I am pleased to have Janet Gittens, Jamie Gonzales, Lisa Metz, Katie Parks and Sarah Whyte once again joining me on the teaching staff again this year. I am also pleased to introduce Heather Furlong to Deas Island for our Wednesday night hip hop classes. Caroline Birch continues as our studio administrator and will be available to help you with your registration and through out the year. Look for our updated staff bios up on the website – coming soon. I have just returned from a week in New York at the Alvin Ailey centre where I took the Horton Modern Dance Pedagogy course. I am looking forward to getting back to class and sharing the work with the students!

See you soon,

Kind regards,

Lesley Benham
Director
Deas Island Dance

DID HANDBOOK and INVOICE
You will be receiving your invoice in the mail by the end of August. This will detail your child’s classes and fees due.
Also, in the next few days you will receive an email with the DID handbook which will have the detailed list of the student attire.

Registration and Open House
A reminder that we have a registration night tomorrow - Thursday August 23rd between 5-8pm.

During Open House on Wednesday September 5th 4-8pm and Thursday September 6th 4-8pm we will be holding the following:
-final registration
-fee drop off
-used shoe exchange
-Dance Wear for sale by Smarty’s

Used Shoe Exchange
I suggest dropping off used shoes ASAP so that you have the best chance to sell them (feel free to drop shoes off any time on Thursday 23rd).

We will only hold the used shoe exchange during September 5th and 6th open house.
We regret we are unable to have clients searching through shoes during the first weeks of dancing – as it just gets too chaotic.

If you are selling shoes please use a ziploc bag with and write your name, phone number, shoe size and type, and asking price on the bag.
Shoes that are not marked and ziploced will not be accepted. Please make sure you have an asking price.

Ballet Leotards Royal Academy Grades 1-3
We have made some changes to our ballet uniform. We are currently phasing out the ruby velvet leotards as we can no longer get the material from our suppliers.

Grade 2 will be the only grade that continues to wear the ruby velvet leotards. If you have a daughter in grade two ballet who needs a ruby leotard we will need to find one from a previous student. If you have a ruby velvet leotard that you are willing to sell we ask that you bring it in during summer school or registration days. But your leotard in a ziploc bag with your name on it and we sell it for you.

We have ordered fully front lined BLOCH Leotards for Grade 1 and 3 and will arrive to LIMBERS DANCEWEAR by the first week of classes. Grade one’s will be in a Mulberry tank leo and Grade Three’s will be in a Royal tank leo. The new leos are excellent quality and well priced at $25.99 for child sizes and $28.99 for ladies sizes.

We will send out an email when the leos have arrived to Limbers. Until they arrive please wear another leotard.

Ballet Character Skirts
Students in RAD Ballet Grade 1- 8 will need character skirts. As in previous years I will be trying on everyone’s skirts the first week of classes to see if they still fit. I will try my best to swap between students so that students do not have to buy a new one. Once I have tried everyone’s skirts on I will contact you to let you know if I have a used character for you. Used skirts are $25.00. New skirts cost $40-$60 depending on the length. Character skirts are kept permanently at the studio and sold for you once you no longer are in need of one.

We have asked Limbers to bring in extra stock for the fittings and they have notified staff that Deas Island Dance students will be coming in. If you need new pointe shoes…please come by during these hours….new pointe shoes need to be checked by Miss Janet before you sew on ribbons. There will be pointe shoe fitters in on this day as well as extra shoe stock …so if you can not make it to the morning session, please come in to the afternoon. Students who are starting pointe for the first time this year….such as students taking 3 ballet classes a week in any of the PRBT/TI/T2/ X1/X2/X3/ are strongly encouraged to come to this Pointe shoe fitting. Dvd’s will be mailed to your homes in September.
If you forgot to order a dvd and are still wanting one you must contact Doug McLeod of Cloud 9 Video directly. His number is 604-929-5387. I believe Doug is away for a large chunk of August – but leave him a message and he will get back to you by September.
