WHAT IS OUR BASIS?

We believe that the Holy Bible, consisting of the Old and New Testaments, is the Word of God, against which nothing can be alleged, to which nothing can be added, and from which nothing can be taken (Revelation 22:18,19). This Word has no equal, because it is:

Inspired by the Holy Spirit who moved different men to write it over a considerable period of time (2 Peter 1:21). As such, it is...

Infallible, that is, a completely reliable and trustworthy Book which should not and need not be doubted, and which is without error, contradiction or misrepresentation.

Sufficient, for it fully contains the will of God and reveals all that we need to believe in order to glorify God and be saved (2 Timothy 3:16,17).

We hold the Word of God as the final rule of faith and life in our churches. We receive it for the regulation, foundation  and confirmation of our faith. It serves as the basis for all authority in our churches.

The Creeds and Confessions

The main teachings of the Bible have been summarized in documents called creeds and confessions. Of the many creeds that have appeared throughout the history of the Christian church, we have chosen to adopt six as our own. They are found in our Book of Praise, pages 437 and following.

Three of these creeds have come to us from the time of the early church, namely:

The Apostles'Creed

The Nicene Creed

The Athanasian Creed

Three more have come to us from the time of the Reformation in the 16th century, namely:

The Belgic Confession

The Heidelberg Catechism

The Canons of Dort

We consider these creeds and confessions to be faithful summaries of the Word of God, and abundantly useful for the preservation and unity of the church. As human documents, however, they do not possess divine authority like the Word of God. The contents of our creeds or confessions are always subject to and to be tested by the standard of the Word (1 John 4: 1).  Most of the creeds and confessions were formulated in response to false teachings which deviated from the Word of God (2 John 1:10), and therefore we deny that doctrine divides.
