Mustang II "G.T. 140"

Welcome to my Mustang II project page. So what's a G.T.140? Well this is my interpretation of what Carroll Shelby might have built had his relationship with Ford continued through to 1978. What I'm attempting is taking my 1978 Mustang II and "re-styling" it with touches from some of my favorite cars from the past, most notably the Shelby Cobra Daytona Coupe. Of course, what's style without performance? So this gets upgrading as well. So why call it "G.T. 140"? I picked the name after the displacement of the engine (140 cubic inches) and it's similar enough to the GT 40s that Ford made (and Shelby perfected) to cause just a little head scratching once the car hits the road.

It's appearance as of 07/24/2002

 Artist's Conception:

This picture was sent to me by fellow enthusiast Mike VanDuinen. Not only is he an artist but he's also in the process of building his own project car. Check out Mike's "Roadster II" which features a convertible top, custom rollcage, flares, '68 Mustang rear panel, relocated firewall and numerous other custom features. Truly a magician with metal! Thanks Mike for the picture and the inspiration!

Updates:

11/25/03 Had a local shop fabricate a set of custom sidepipes for me. Since the car is only a 4-popper I decided on a single pipe on each side (the original Daytonas had two per side). Next step is to work out their position and then build the rocker panels in which they're recessed. Also picked up new calipers, rotors and pads for the front today. Don't believe in old parts when it comes to brakes.

11/20/03 Finally completed my rear disc brake conversion and pinion mounted emergency/parking brake. See the specific page here.

11/18/03 Bought a fantastic set of rims on Ebay! They are Shelby Cal 500 slotted (vintage '70s) and are 15"x8.5 and 15"x10". I mounted a new set of Cooper Cobra GTs on them (265/50s for the front and 295/50s for the rear). Now the work begins making these monsters fit under the wheel wells. Here's a peek at the rims

10/20/02 Progress on GT140 is at a standstill due to too many distractions! (Sorry Mike, Carlisle 2003 is out, 2004 2005 maybe? ) I'm still working on the new wiring harness...what a pain!

The Beginning:

I purchased my car from my hometown dealership September 30th, 1985 for a price of $2750 CDN (about $1790 U.S.). It was all original and equipped with a 2.3 4cyl and 4-speed manual. One of the first things I did to the car is install a pair of Cobra II side window louvers and a rear spoiler. Here's how it looked back then:

She treated me well for the next 6 years; by '91 it had over a 100,000 miles on it and was starting to burn oil. I also had a wife and 3 kids and it wasn't too roomy! I had joined the "mini van generation" and the Mustang was parked. Little did I realize for how long! I rebuilt the engine that year including a 0.30 over bore, new pistons, bearings, and such. The day before it was to be parked and the engine pulled, the clutch decided to let go as well, so a new clutch and flywheel were added to the shopping list. I had put about 1000 miles on the rebuild when I was granted a company car. The Mustang was parked in the garage on jack stands with the intention of doing a complete restoration. I gutted the interior (it was getting ratty) and removed all of the trim, then life got in the way! 7 years passed and it remained virtually untouched. In the fall of 1998, I became inspired and "Project G.T. 140" was begun.
