Sweet Sheba went to the Bridge on Friday, just short of her 13th birthday. She leaves a huge hole in my heart and in the hearts of her forever family, who have cared for her for the past several years. Please walk through this page with us in memory of this great little girl who will be sorely missed.
Sheba far exceeded our expectations when she was born here at Marpointe. Showing promise as a puppy, we decided to grow her out but remained concerned that she might "go over" being at the top of the size chart all along. However, her chiseled head and ear set, excellent shoulder, rear and confident movement outweighed our concern so we kept our fingers crossed. Her size wavered from at the top of all charts to slightly over the charts, but lo and behold, she stopped growing at seven months when she came in season and finished growing at 15".
At first, Sheba showed a complete lack of enthusiasm in the show ring...making me sorely disappointed and frustrated to the extreme. I struggled through 2 sets of shows with a dog I had to practically drag around the ring and who absolutely hated the table. She was not afraid of the judge, just hated to show the enthusiasm and pizzazz necessary in a show dog. I thought to try her at one more show before giving up. Suddenly, it was as though a light bulb went off in her head, or maybe it was a change in what I was using to bait her, but all of a sudden it was as though a fairy had whispered in her ear and she took off! She had a complete change of heart and began to show like mad! I didn't know what caused the change around but was very glad something happened in that Sheltie head to make her suddenly realize she loved to strut her stuff! Perhaps it was because it was the first outdoor show I took her to, but Sheba showed well enough at that show to garner her finishing points at Comox Valley Kennel Club Dog shows in June of 1999.
Finishing her championship with a BB and a Group 1st as well as a BPIS at seven months of age, Sheba was on a roll. Entering her in every show until she was a year old was an impossible task for myself to tackle, so a good friend, Gail Riches, stepped in to help. I handled Sheba on the Vancouver Island Circuits while Gail took her to the Mainland shows. Gails' granddaughter, Michelle, was a great handler and together we were able to keep Sheba showing through the summer. Sheba amassed 1 BPIS, 7 BPIG, 2 Group 1st, 2 Group 3rd, and 1 Group 4th, as well as numerous BB and BOS wins. Sheba was #3 sheltie puppy in 1999 according to the CSSA here in Canada (March/00 Newsletter).
This picture was taken of her taking a Group 1 and BPIG at Pacific Kennel Club in August of 1999
Sheba was also entered in an All Breed International Show in Vancouver in September/99 and received her JA Puppy Rating which is equivalent to a puppy championship under European rules, as well as a RESERVE BEST BRED BY EXHIBITOR PUPPY IN SHOW under four respected judges. It was a hard haul and all of us were glad to take a winter holiday when she blew her coat as a yearling.
Sheba was not Specialled past that year, as once again she developed an aversion to the show ring, becoming a "slug" when it came to moving for the judge. We decided to try her in the whelping box where she produced Multi-Group Winning Ch. Marpointe's Miss Kitty, in 2001 . We did do a sojourn to the American National Specialty in Utah in 2004, where Sheba showed well, but once we came home we decided to breed her once again and this time she produced Ch. Marpointe She's So Fine, and Ch. Marpointe Makeda O'Riverwind . It was after this that we decided to retire her. She lived the easy life with Linda Walford in Revelstoke, B.C.
walking in
the rain with her friends
hanging
out at the lake
Or simply being the beauty queen.
We brought her out of retirement once for the SSCBC Specialty in Cloverdale where she got Best Veteran under respected breeder judge Guy Jeavons.

She was always the reigning queen, both in show record and in our hearts....she will be missed.
Rest in Peace Old Friend.
