Update – May, 2008

Refreshed the site with updated photo of the 800 cc sled and a new photo on the home page.  Changed the music clip

on the home page as well.

1000 cc sled might not see racing action this summer as it is long overdue for a refresh.

Original race sled number 417 will be back in action in pro-stock trim this summer.  It was down for the winter season

as it underwent some “experimental” race prep.  Changed porting, changed head configuration, changed pipe

configuration, changed ignition, changed front suspension, changed intake and carburetion … otherwise though it is

pretty much the same as last summer.  I know it runs, I loaded it into the trailer …..

Update – January 18th, 2008

Had some suspension setup trouble and other gremlins at first race.  Should have about 80% of bugs worked out for next event.

Updated SLEDS page with new photo and details of the 1000.

Update – January 1st, 2008

Happy New Year!  It’s a new year and a new season of drag racing is upon us!  The first sanctioned race of the year is this weekend in Porcupine Plain, Sk. and we’ll have one sled participating, the 416.   It 416 has been given some upgrades

and will be competing in the 1000 Open Snow Drag class this season.  New photos and details on the SLEDS page as soon as I finish them.  The 417 is getting an overhaul, more details will follow as well.  Best of luck to all in the upcoming season!

Be sure to check the LINKS page for the new 2008 SSRA Winter poster!

Update – December, 2007

Finished off the summer this year with a fairly good weekend in Warman.  Didn’t quite get to where we wanted to be but that’s racing.  Ended up with some awards at the SSRA banquet so it couldn’t have been all bad (see recent trophy finishes for details).  Have big plans for some sled upgrades for the coming season, hopefully time permits all the changes.

Thanks to VP Race Fuels and to Team Clutches for their past sponsorship and for their renewed assistance in 2008!  It certainly is appreciated.

Update – Oct. 16th, 2007

Been a busy summer.  Attended SSRA race in Russell, Manitoba.  Was a good race, very dusty though.  Finished the year with the last two races at the Warman track.  Finally got the leak in the 1000 fixed, now we can go back to concentrate on tuning.  Updated carbs could be in order.

Can’t say how excited we are about the performance of Glen’s 600 Improved sled.  If our math is right we should capture the 700 Improved points championship for the year!

Update – Aug 21st, 2007

Been a busy couple of weeks attending 2 races, Melville and Warman.  Melville was a small race but went fairly well.  Didn’t get particularly good results from Glen’s 600 or my 800 but worked some bugs out.  1000 cc sled ran well but seems to have developed a leaking cylinder.  Warman was a good race with more entrants.  Made some adjustments to Glen’s 600 and the 800 based on the previous week which paid off well.  Glen’s 600 improved sled in particular is really coming along well.

Update – July 14th, 2007

Last grass season I commented that the 414 sled driven by Glen would only get better as we figured out the right combination for him.  Well, ya baby!  Was I ever right!  After going over the results of the winter races we put in a new setup and the result at the SSRA season opener was as follows:

Improved Stock 600 – third

Pro-Stock 600 – second

Improved Stock 700 – CHAMPION!

Your webmaster was unable to attend (work is really starting to get in the way of my racing), but I just got off the phone and it was only a late start that kept the Maxceleration racer from winning 600 Improved.   If leaving on the light resulted in a 700 improved win, we are really excited about the rest of the season for Glen!

I haven’t even got a great setup on the carbs yet, so we are very excited about the summer of racing with the 414!

Update – mid March, 2007

It was a long drive through the middle of no where but I made the trip to Fort McMurray.  Glad I went after hearing so much about the community on the news the last year or two.  Ran fairly well in the races but no trophies.  I have to say that the competition in the 1000 cc Improved class is getting stronger every race.  A couple of years ago you might not see a 1000 cc sled at a race.  Now, it is sometimes the largest class.  The racing is getting faster!

I’ve done a lot of analysis of the RacePak data from the various snow races this season.  I think I’ve uncovered a problem that held the big sled back from doing better.  It is not a complex change so now I’m really looking forward to the grass racing season!  Tune the 1000 and freshen the 800 and look out, here we come!

I’ve updated the video section of the website with a short video compiling some photos and video from the snow racing season.  Thanks to Rick Wilde from Rebelsled.Com for supplying some of the photos and to our camera crew for freezing their a@!$&^  off while trying the best they could to get some good shots.

Update – March 4th, 2007

Attended the Snow Drag race in Fernie, British Columbia yesterday.  An announcer stated that it was the 17th annual, and their experience in hosting a fun race showed!  This was by far the most fun and best organized race I’ve attended so far this year.  The track was excellent and held up well all day WITHOUT MOVING THE STARTING LINE!  For those that have attended snow drags before you realize that is no small miracle.  They accomplish this with a unique procedure of repairing and prepping the line after EVERY HEAT.  They have backer boards mounted to quads lined up directly behind each racer to catch the snow and after the start two workers for each lane fill in the hole with the roosted snow and rake and pack it down.  They accomplish this while still maintaining a pace of a heat at least once per minute.  Hats off to the Fernie Snowmobile Association for an excellent event.

Update  - February 21st, 2007

Raced at Alberta Beach this past weekend.  While we didn’t have a lot of success, progress was made and fun was had.  Was really nice to have my brother Rob and his family there helping out and cheering us on!

The Improved 1000 cc sled was not allowed to run in Improved.  Although it is ISR legal, the local organizers of this non-sanctioned race felt it was too much and bumped it to unlimited open mod!  That fact that we were even competitive is a credit to how far we are coming with sled.

Just a little more tuning and then bring on the Western Canadian Championships!

Update – February 5th, 2007

The Hudson Bay race has come and gone and I have good news and bad news.  The bad news is that my Hudson Bay jinks has continued.  On the two main race sleds, the throttle cable broke on the 1000cc and the nitrous system went inoperative on the 800cc.  Disappointing after driving 10 hours one way!  The good news … didn’t crash and end up in the hospital this year so I guess it could have been worse.

This also marks the first anniversary of our web site.  In our first year we have had over 1,300 visitors who have combined for over 6,200 page loads!  Thanks to all who have visited!

Update – January 28th, 2007

Last weekend in Wetaskiwin was a bit of a roller coaster ride for us.  Had a pretty good showing on Saturday, winning some heats and running fairly well.  On Sunday we got bit by an icy track that resulted in absolutely zero hook-up for our heavier sleds.  In one heat I actually thought I had broke a belt or a chain as after punching the throttle the sled did not move at all.  It was a very busy race and we also made some mistakes by entering into too many classes and not having enough time to prep between heats.

Overall, we were encouraged by our first day out on Saturday though and are looking for improved results in Hudson Bay.

Update – January 14th, 2007

After years of living with the pink and teal graphics of the ’96 XCR, I finally gave it a makeover.  It’s not quite done yet actually as it still needs a seat cover, springs painted, etc.  but it is better, and is now a match for the 800 XXXCR.  Does anyone really remember when pink/purple on black was a hot color scheme in the early 90’s?  Me neither.  See the “sleds” page for photos.

Update – January 6th, 2007

Spent the day in Wetaskiwin at Wetaskiwin Motorsports today.  I hadn’t been comfortable with a couple of items in the setup of the 1000 cc sled since its upgrade and wanted to get them worked out.  This was my first visit to their shop and I was really impressed!   Not only is it a nice store with lots of stuff on display but Colleen and Larry are two of the nicest people I have ever met.  They provided excellent service in working through my setup issues with their new chassis dyno.  I know it would have taken an eternity of field testing to accomplish what was learned and that might not have even been long enough.  Thanks guys, your service was invaluable!

If you’re looking to get a little extra out of your sled, give them a call at (780) 352-5408.   They’re friendly people who provide great service, and they’re racers as well so they can understand your problems.

I’m really pumped now for the next race!  Can’t wait to try the changes!

This evening the web site reach another milestone.   We had the 1000th visitor to our site at about 7:42 pm.  In a little less than a year since the inception of the site the 1000 visitors have generated over 5000 page loads.  Welcome to our little space in the world wide web and thanks to all who have visited.

Update – December 14th, 2006

We are very pleased to announce that Team Industries Motorports has accepted us into their Racer Support Program for the 2006-2007 snow racing season.    Maxceleration Racing will be making exclusive use of Team Industries clutching products this season, and we are excited to expand the use of the Team Roller Secondary clutch to our 600 cc sleds.   We have already been using Team products in the 800cc and 1000 cc sleds with good success and hope to improve our performance even more with this new support from Team Industries.  A big “THANK YOU” to Team!  Please visit our Sponsors/Links page for a link to the Team web site and check out their high quality line of clutching products.

Update – November 19th, 2006

Made some tweaks to the website.  Updated “sleds” page.  You can now click on the picture of each sled to see more photos.   Added some links to the “sponsors/links” page.  Had to reduce the quality of Video 1 as I was running low on server space.

Update – October 13th, 2006

The SSRA season finale at Eckville, Alberta was last weekend and the Maxceleration Racing team had its best outing ever!    This was no slouch event either as several Hay Days participants were in attendance including the Hay Days’ Top Fuel winning Hogg Wild Racing Team.  We entered four sleds in 11 classes.  In the 11 classes entered, we managed trophy finishes in 7 of them!  Check the Recent Trophy Finishes page for details.

As predicted, the 414 sled of Glen’s continues to get stronger and congratulations to him for his 2 trophy finishes.

The 415 sled (a.k.a. Old Smokey) made its first passes and despite an engine that was intent on fouling the centre cylinder, it made it to the finals taking a third in Trail Stock 600.

We can hardly wait to get the 416 sled on snow.  Since its upgrade, it has yet to be beaten by any other non-studded sled.  Should make for an interesting snow drag season if we can keep getting the power to the ground.  The real test will be when we race the Bear Grease Racing team sleds.

The web site has also been updated.  Audio clips were added to some of the pages and Video 2 has been updated to include highlights from the entire season including the race at Eckville.

Thanks again for visiting out site!

Update – August, 2006

VP Race Fuels Western Canadian Distribution Centre in Calgary generously offered a product discount to the race team.  We would like to thank them and encourage you to visit our sponsor page and follow the link to the VP Race Fuel site.

Big news from the Warman race.  This was Glen’s first grass drag and he was definitely competitive!  Check the Holco 500 page for details.  A little more tuning should net him some trophy finishes in the near future!  Also big news, the 416 sled took its first victory in the Improved 1000 cc class since its engine upgrade this summer.  This puts the 416 in the hunt for the Improved 1000 points race for the SSRA season!

Update May, 2006 – The race trailer is going to be full this year!

The crashed 800 XCR is currently being rebuilt as an 800 Pro-Stock Sled.  With any luck at all it lasts more than one pass this year as I don’t think my body can take another crash.  The black ’96 600 XCR is being pulled from trail duty and will be a race only sled this year.  It was in an awkward classification as ISR rules only allowed track extensions in 800 and 1000 improved classes so the sled wasn’t as competitive as it could have been, despite the success it had in smaller races with more relaxed sled classifications.    This sled’s track extension is staying but the motor is being increased to 1000 cc’s of displacement!  We will be looking to take on some of the best  in the 1000 Improved class!

In addition, two new sleds are being added to the race team.  Glen LaValley will be running a ’97 600 XCR Improved sled.    The other new sled will be a matching ’97 600 XCR set up as a 600 Pro-Stock machine and run by Mike LaValley.

You might think we’re crazy but you counted right, that’s 4 Polaris XCR sleds based on the aggressor chassis!  They are all old and heavy but experience has proved that these triples are capable of making BIG power.

Update Feb 15th, 2006:   This fall I spent a lot of time updating the race sled in anticipation of the 2006 season.  Well, the weather man has not cooperated and there has been little or no snow in Western Canada.  I had originally planned on attending 5 races but three of them were cancelled.  As for the other two …. read on ………

This is what the race sled looked like prior to the first race in Hudson Bay, Sask.  However, in the very first heat ( a King of the Snow heat) I suffered a near catastrophic accident.  The Race Pac data recorder was recording as I crossed the finish line at 107 MPH (173 Km’s/hr) and for reasons we are not yet sure of, the sled went nose down and then end over end.  Coming off and landing on your head at that speed is not fun, trust me.  From the spot where the accident started to where I woke up on the snow, my body traveled approximately 110 yards, or roughly the length of a football field.  I was knocked unconscious for a few seconds and suffered an injured shoulder, but by no small miracle was otherwise unharmed.  There are pieces of that day that I still can’t remember but other than that I have recovered nicely.  I can’t say the same for the sled however as it is going to need some major rebuilding.  I hope to post some photos soon.

I need to take this time and space to thank some people who were very helpful during this very scary day for my family.   My fellow racers who were first on the scene at the end of the track were excellent.  Sorry I don’t know your names but you know who you were and thank you.  Also unnamed was the woman in the blue jacket who was a local nurse from Hudson Bay I believe.   I understand that she sprinted from her spectator’s spot near the finish line to come to my aid.  The EMS and hospital staff in Hudson Bay were awesome as well, I don’t believe I could have received quicker care had the accident occurred anywhere else.  And to those that helped my family remove the wrecked sled from the track so that they could get to the hospital to check on me, a big thanks as well (I think it was a crew from Montreal Lake, but like I said, there are parts of that day I still can’t remember).  Thanks to all at the race and from Hudson Bay for their care and concern, is was greatly appreciated.  A special thanks to my wife for not freeking out too badly when I called her and told her what happened.

Huge moral to the story for all racers … invest in the best safety equipment you can as I firmly believe that my Snell rated helmet and my TekVest saved my life.

Well, guess what.  The next weekend was the Western Canadian Championships in Montreal Lake.  The race sled was wrecked, but I was already in the right part of the country so I went anyway.  I gave the 10 year old trail sled a quick tune up and entered without much hope for success, but anxious to get back and try racing.  To tell you the truth, I was more than a little nervous on the first run.

I guess it was my lucky week.  My first heat came and went without a crash.  The old sled stumbled badly and put me out of the 800 Improved class, but I didn’t crash.  A quick carb adjustment and a better warm-up and the old anchor of a sled lit up and ran not too badly.  Ended up making it through to the semi finals of Pro Stock 800 and actually took a third place finish in 1000 Improved!  The day far exceeded my expectations.

With the terrible weather and the race sled in need of many hours of repair, that is probably it for the winter 2006 race season.  Check back for some video and photos from Hudson Bay and Montreal Lake.
