| The Vic High Neighbourhood Choir
welcomes former students (current ones, too!), staff, faculty,
families, friends
and neighbours of western Canada's oldest high school to participate in
a non-auditioned a capella vocal ensemble, supporting program
development at Victoria High School through participation in school events, fundraising activities,
and outreach in the
community. The choir explores
roots music, sampling from traditions through the
ages and from around the world: songs of praise and thanks, chants and
hollers, gospels, sea chanteys, laments, celebrations and protest
songs. Through a process called 'Singing in 4 Dimensions'
choir
members incorporate rhythm, dance, scatting and harmony into a rich,
multi-layered sound guaranteed to bring an audience to its feet! Created in 2006 (sponsored in part by a grant from BC Hydro) as an extension of my outreach work with the students of Victoria High School's choral program (under the direction of Eric Emde), the Vic High Neighbourhood Choir is a model for community development and educational innovation now available to other schools and communities on Vancouver Island. |
