VOYAGEURS CONTRACTS OF LAVALLÉES
BETWEEN 1688 AND 1823
Below are 191 contracts for Lavallées and one for a Laval whom I believe was actually a Lavallée. The summaries for these contracts were taken from "Répertoire des engagements pour l'ouest" in RAPQ 1929-30-31-32 published by Massicotte which surprizingly listed only 25 contracts, and from private research. The RAPQ (Rapport de l'Archiviste de la Province de Quebec) does not list the place of origin of the contractee or his salary, although these were likely mentioned in the contract. This list is by no mean complete and will hopefully grow in the future. Your contribution will be appreciated by all.

Some contracts with historical significance for North America are:

  • We find Noel Lavallée together with 43 others going to settle Détroit in 1703 for the Compagnie de la colonie du Canada. This was not the first settlement as the site had been settled permanently since around 1688 by traders, and officially by Cadillac in 1701, but it is the first settlers support group to arrive.
  • The brothers Jean and Jacques Lavallée engaged by La Vérendrye in 1731 for his first deep exploration of the western plains.
  • Pierre Lavallée employed by Mackenzie for his exploration voyage to the Arctic in 1801.Should the Mackenzie River be renamed the Lavallée River?
  • Antoine Lavallée going to the mouth of the Columbia in 1812 for the American Fur Company
  • He was soon joined two months later by Louis Lavallée employed by the Northwest Company (Canadian) which took over the whole area until 1845.
    The Lavallées and Lavalleys of today have bragging rights.Unless these guys entered into their contracts but never fulfilled them...
