Militia Captains for the Quebec city area in 1775.

In 1776, at the time of the invasion of Canada by the rebels of New England, a roll of the Canadian militia was taken at the request of the British military government. The rolls for the "District" of Québec is kept at the Archives of Canada under the classification "Reg. des Milices, Sér. V.,Vol. 1909". This registry lists the names of the 7,065 Canadian militia members for this region during the Yankee invasion. At the end of the registry a summary lists the 59 companies identified by their parishes of origin, their captains and the number of married men and single men (garçons) in each company.

This document gives a good idea of the distribution of the population in the region in 1776, since all able men between the age of 16 and 60 had to serve, with few rare exceptions.
