8TH 1632'
Engagement contract of forty men for the establishment of a colony in New
France by Sieur Guillaume de Caën. The colonists will embark on the ships of
Emery de Caën and Charles Du Plessis-Bochart to go to Québec to receive the town
from the English. The engaged colonists must hibernate in Québec and work during
three years for the "Company of Nouvelle-France".They will receive an
advance on their salary and the rest will be paid at the end of the three years.

This accounts for 37 persons. Three others on these ships were the Jesuits father Paul Lejeune, father de Noue and brother Gilbert, whom had been assigned by Richelieu to go on this voyage. The colonists embarked at "Honfleur", April 21 1632, on the two Royal
Navy ships SALAMANDRE and LIONNE. The two ships were 300 tx. One of the vessel was a warship and the other a "patache", a high sea armed merchant vessel. They were both extensively refitted at "Le Havre" to carry passengers, construction supplies and heavy armaments. Period documents include invoices and payments of thousand of "livres" for refitting. The marching orders from Cardinal Richelieu to de Caen specified that all of the forty men to immigrate shall be catholics.
