Washington County Court House
101 East St. Louis St.
Nashville, IL 62263
As of Aug.10/98 I am waiting
for a list of their holdings and price for a lookup.
Generally, for snail mail requests, a single look up by the courthouse
is $10.00 and a photo copy is a $1.00 for regular size paper and $2.00
for legal size paper. They will not do a land title search.
A courthouse researcher commented, "we did do research at the county
courthouse and they were really nice. We searched through land records
and picked out quite a few. They let us use big tables in the back. But
it is a small courtouse! They copied all of our pages for us. I don't remember
now how much a page we paid but it wasn't much. We didn't get copies of
any certificates because the courthouse had burned after my ancestors moved
from there! But they did have a Marriage Record book that listed my ancestors.
I just hand copied stuff from it."
Other courthouse researchers have commented that the courthouse workers
would prefer you come to the courthouse to do your research, otherwise
correspondence by mail gets put back until they can get to it.

The above addresses gets you into databases for searching books. The 2nd
one is Shawnee Library which has inter library loans of books that can
be arranged if your local library is in the system. There is one for northern
Illinois and it is found at the state site I believe. Hope this helps some
of you.

Policy for IRAD
All the local
county records held at IRAD at SIU - note that there are only a few
for Washington County but IRAD at SIU also has microfilms of the Washington
County records.
LDS Family History Center
located in a town near you. Check your
phone directory. At the LDS center, you can order/rent for minimal charge
microfilms from Salt Lake City of pre-1900 records. Washington County records HAVE NOT been allowed to be microfilmed. The LDS was pretty thorough in microfilming pre-1900 county records and you
will probably find most other pre-1900 records in the county offices also on microfilm
at Salt Lake City.

Research
Please join the local societies. Remember,
they are being run by volunteers and many times the money for things like
pencils, paper, paper clips, toilet paper are coming out of those volunteers
pockets just to keep the society running for people like you and me trying
to research their ancestors in Washington County IL. So, when you join,
send an extra dollar or two for those extra little things needed for the
society.
We need the cost of membership for each of the societies. Thank you.
