May, 2007

Above is an aerial picture of DEW Line site DYE-Main, on Cape Dyer, Baffin Island, Nunavut, Canada.  The picture was taken on May 9, 2007 - the drifts are 20 feet deep in places.  The entire site is spread over 17 km - this is only a small portion of it.  The photo above is of the construction camp where I'll be living for the summer.

I've been in Ottawa for the last month (and will be until mid-June) getting all trained up to clean up the mess the Americans left behind in Canada's Arctic.

Each of the 21 DEW Line sites that we are cleaning up has tens of thousands of semi-empty oil barrels full of god-knows-what, the old barracks and shops are covered in PCB-amended paint and filled with asbestos, lead, mercury, cadmium, landfills.  Huge areas of terrain are contaminated with hydrocarbons, and all the soil has to be dug up, sampled, and treated or shipped south.  The site I'll be going to is a seven-year job.

Go onto Google Earth, and type in Cape Dyer.  You'll get taken to the site, and it has VERY high-resolution satellite pictures taken in the July of 2006.  You'll get a better sense of just how massive the job is.

Lots of polar bears, I've been told.  In fact, we have to have 'bear monitors' with us at all times.  If you want to know more, e-mail me.

And now the regular intro...

Welcome to my website!  I know personal websites smack of ego and self-absorption, but my intent is to entertain and inform.  You've probably found this web space by searching for one of the topics I've included, so please click away, and explore this site for your inquiry - maybe you'll find something else of interest too!

Quick Profile

R. Scott Hall, homo sapiens, male, 31 years old.  191 cm tall, 95 kg, brown hair, devastatingly handsome.  Hobbies include cooking my pets and leaving out commas.  Classically educated with Bohemian tendencies.  After studying engineering for the last 5-1/2 years (which was essentially a meat-grinder for my mind, body, and soul) I'm looking forward to enjoying the little things in life.

Profession:  Mechanical Engineer.  I am qualified to approve safety-load factors on nuclear power-plant coolant systems, while still being incapable of changing the oil in my car.

Social standing:  Respectable, except during weddings, wakes, and Hallowe'en.

Marital status:  Happily unmarried to a woman of unfathomable beauty and infinite patience.

Reputation:  Easy-going and tolerant.  A safe driver, and prone to bouts of creativity (but not while driving).

Pet peeves:  People who say "orientated" instead of "oriented".  (Using more syllables does not necessarily make you sound smarter - case in point: George W. Bush.)
