If you have any stories or examples of how you've been screwed over by the Co-op department, e-mail them to me! I'd love to post them, if that's okay with you... You know, I've done my best on this web-site to avoid profanity at all cost. I've always believed that vulgarity is the least intelligent method of expressing yourself. But in this case, please forgive me... The UVic Engineering Co-op office is run by a bunch of FUCKING WANKERS. The whole department is ineffective, unnecessary, and completely self-preserving. They do no good for any students. I never once used the Co-op computer database, and I probably spent a combined total of 5 minutes within the walls of their office throughout the 4 years at UVic, yet I had absolutely no trouble finding jobs on my own. The Co-op Department is, in a word, useless. Think of it this way: almost an hour's pay of every day spent on a Co-op term goes to Co-op fees (depending on your wage). If you don't believe me, work it out of your own. Ask yourself, is this 'fee' justified for the 'services' you receive? The requirement for writing the work-term reports is also pointless. In the course of our degree program, we write scores of reports (labs, projects, etc.)... why they make us jump through this meaningless hoop is beyond me. They squeeze a technical report out of us for ENGR 446 - isn't that enough? Here's a tip. Make sure your report isn't 'proprietary', pick it up after it's marked (so the the Coop office doesn't keep it on file), and recycle it for your next work term. The Co-op Office is clueless enough - all you'll need to do is change the date and the title. This will save you hours of hassle. See ENGR 446 for more info on this. Rather than rave and rage, I think it would be best if I posted a letter which I wrote to the University after I received my degree. Please read on, as it might give you some idea of what to expect from (and how to respond to) the UVic Engineering Co-op office. I know it's rather long, but I assure you, it's worth the read. I wouldn't be surprised if the UVic lawyers cry "slander", but I've certainly got enough facts to back up my opinions. Click here to read it... I encourage you, if you have any disagreement with the Co-op program, write letters to the department, faculty, ombudsman, Student Union, student paper, local paper, or McLean's Magazine. A simple letter can have far-reaching effects. |
