I liked this course so much I took it twice. Seriously, this was, by far, my least favourite course of the degree... it's the only course I actually got an 'E' in, but instead of just re-writing the final, I chose to take it again so that I could actually try to understand the material. The actual concepts aren't that difficult, but... The material was dry, not very applicable to my interests, and everyone I spoke to who had finished their degree said they never used it in their career. Also, about half of the marks in the course were given to programming code, for which I have little interest - I took mechanical engineering, not computer engineering! I can see some value in the material, but the concepts could more easily be covered as a side-subject in the 1st year computer classes - I don't agree with dedicating a whole course to it. Historically, mechanical students do rather poorly in the class, while the computer engineers excel. The grade spread (the second time I took it) showed this: of a class of 136 students, 40% of the class got a D or less - about 15% failed the course outright. That's a pretty poor reflection on the course as a whole - subject-matter and teaching combined. I still have all the Matlab files saved. E-mail me if you would like them - I noticed that the assignments change very little year-to-year, so you might just have to change a few variables and you're set. |
