MATH 133

If you've transferred to UVic and have been placed in MATH 233A instead of MATH 133, read the following very carefully:

MATH 233A is geared towards math majors and is very theoretical and abstract.  If you are an engineering student and registered in MATH 233A DROP THE COURSE IMMEDIATELY and register for MATH 133, even if it means waiting one or two terms to take it when it's offered.  It's worth it to juggle some courses around.

I was placed into MATH 233A when I transferred from the college.  It was a horrific experience.  The prof was a pompous twit, and the text was the worst I've been forced to use - I can't recall the text's title (it was a brick-red colour), because I sold it back to the Bookstore before it gave me brain herpes.  It wasn't a math text inasmuch as it was a poorly-written philosophy book.  I de-registered from the course the day of the drop date (I gave the course a fair chance before quitting).

I then took MATH 133 the next fall, which was a Tantric orgasm by comparison.  The prof was dedicated and had an entertaining wit, and the text (written by Anton & Rorres), along with the freely-available study-guide, was excellent.  It really made we wonder why the same basic material is covered so poorly under MATH 233A.  Those poor math majors...

The material in MATH 133 is essential to engineering.  Matrices are an invaluable tool used in every second course you will take henceforth.  Imaginary numbers are used extensively in subsequent math courses (especially MATH 201), circuitry analysis (ELEC 250, ELEC 365), and in half-a-dozen other MECH courses.  Eigenvectors and Eigenvalues are used in examining machine dynamics and vibrations (MECH 330, MECH 421).

Keep in mind, your standard graphing calculator will to everything that this course teaches you to do by hand.  Of course, it helps to understand how these functions work instead of simply punching in numbers on a keypad.  This course has much value, and it's worth taking the time to understand the concepts.

Again, I have most of my quizzes and midterm available (there were no marked assignments).  E-mail me if you'd like to see a copy.
