"Crazy Ivan is a US Navy term for a Soviet submarine manoeuvre, characterized by any number of sudden and sharp turns, used by submarine crews to "look behind" them. Due to the acoustic distortions and noise caused by propeller blades, it is near-impossible to use conventional sonar behind a submarine..." We nicknamed the prof who taught this course 'Crazy Ivan'. He has a brilliant mind, and writes notes and diagrams with an impeccable hand. He also escaped the Soviet Union in the 1980's through cunning and guile (and possibly fought his way through German Shepherds named 'Bondie' over barbed-wire fences) so the legend goes. He also mumbles to the chalk-board in such an incoherent accent that basic communication is as absent as teeth on an East-Vancouver hooker. (More to come) |
