January 15, 2006 For God's sake, people, grow up! Are the Muslim Imams and Mullahs so bloody insecure in their faith that they're completely intolerant of free and open discussion? Are they so afraid of loosing their power over their impoverished and under-educated followers that they're threatened by a doodling Dane?
This is really just a matter of a small religious/political elite distracting Islamic populations from the fact that their leaders are actually screwing their people out of real social and economic stability. This is exactly what the Palestinian authorities have been doing for decades - they rile up their populations against Israeli aggression when the real issue is that the Palestinian and Arab leaders have done nothing to really improve their people's situation. This is a political tool that goes back eons. So what's all this 'cartoon' fuss about? Is it really true that the Koran says images of Mohammad are forbidden? Actually, no. The whole concept behind the prohibition of portraying Mohammad in portrait is merely a convention, much like the concept of preventing Catholic priests from marrying - it's not included in the sacred texts, but was established over time according to contemporary reasoning. This is similar to the Hebrew 'Kosher' rules that deny the consumption of shellfish... would you trust mussels left sitting in the desert sun at an open market in the days before refrigeration? No. But the ancient world didn't understand the science of bacteriology, so when people regularly got sick by eating shellfish, it made sense to assume that shellfish were evil and cursed by God and therefore you were punished for eating them. This was simply ancient reasoning that, over time, became accepted dogma. The Christian Bible says "don't make any graven images", but have you walked into a Catholic church lately? Obviously, interpretation is subjective to those in power. This is really a matter of blind acceptance vs. intelligent discussion. With regards to these 'cartoons', all it would have taken to raise awareness to the issue and hand were some level-headed Muslims to hold some press conferences (and invite other religious leaders) and say, "Hey, this isn't acceptable to us and this is why..." Do these fundamentalists, who are inciting this violent response, really expect other nations to respect a gang of vandals and hooligans? Let's have a closer look... Exhibit 1 (above left): A film poster of Monty Python's 1979 film Life of Brian.. Anyone who's seen it will agree it's the most irreverent parody of the Christian faith ever made. Did Christian nations start burning embassies over this? No. You either loved it, didn't understand it, or chose to give it no mind and got on with your life. That's a mature, reasoned response. Or if you were really steamed, you could have boycotted the theatre... Exhibit 2 (above centre): From Egypt's daily Al Ahram newspaper, April 21, 2001 -Jews drinking the blood of Muslim children. This is just an example of the rubbish that Muslim nations frequently publish in their papers. See also http://www.snopes.com/religion/blood.htm which quotes a Saudi government-run newspaper editorial on how Jews use children's blood to make holiday snacks. That any person could believe this preposterous crap is only a sad indictment of a complete failure, at the most basic level, of many Islamic-backed educational systems . Exhibit 3 (above right): One of the twelve 'cartoons' from the Danish newspaper Jyllands-Posten that have spread rage around the Islamic world. And this isn't even the most offensive (click here to see all twelve). Now look at the cartoon in the centre. Now look back at the cartoon on the right. Who's more justified to be upset over 'cartoons'? And of course there's the hypocrisy that seems to run rampant among these fundamentalist Islamic clergy: Example 1: Allah, Jehovah, Yahweh, God, The Big Guy, whatever you choose to call Him, the Jewish/Christian/Muslim God is the same guy. They all have their roots in the Semitic tradition. That's just historical fact. So why don't Imams raise hell about all those depictions of God painted on the walls of the Vatican? Same goes with Jesus, one of the Muslims' prophets - you aren't supposed to make a picture Him, just like you aren't supposed to make a picture of Mohammed. So why aren't the Imams screaming for blood about all those millions upon millions of portraits and crucifixes hanging in churches and homes around the world? Where was the screaming when Jim Carrey portrayed God in Bruce Almighty? What about when South Park had Jesus and Mohammed on the same team of Super-friends? Those Imams and Mullahs really need to make up their minds... The Imams and Mullahs demand utmost respect for their faith from the West. But many fundamentalist Islamic clergy show absolutely no respect for any other faiths. Respect is mutual, and it has to be earned: Example 2: March 2001. Mullah Mohammed Omar of the Afghani Taliban ordered the destruction of two giant 1500-year-old Buddhist statues which were carved into an Afghani mountainside. The Taliban fundamentalists used them for artillery target-practice and completely obliterated them in the process. Archeological value notwithstanding, this was the epitome of disrespect to other faiths. Do these barbarians actually expect rational, sober governments to take them seriously? And the response from certain elements of the fundamentalist Islamic community is childish at best. The President of Iran has called for a contest for Muslims to submit cartoons making light of the Holocaust, and the 'best' twelve will be published. Real mature there, fella. Besides, it's nothing new compared to what the Arab press has been doing for years (again, see centre picture above). Not only that, but when some Imams took the 'Twelve Blasphemies' on tour through Islamic nations to prove the evilness of the West, they threw in some really vile pictures that were in no way connected to the Danish cartoons. In other words, they lied to their people. Almost makes them look as bad as Bush. Almost... The ultimate irony to this story is that the Danish Muslim, Ahmed Akkari, who originally sent the 'cartoons' on tour through the Middle East, now regrets the response by the Arabic world. While a devout Muslim, it seems that he wanted to raise awareness of Western insensitivity (a fair goal) but his intentions were high-jacked by fundamentalists with ulterior motives. Again, this argument reverts to Imams holding inordinate power over impoverished and under-educated followers. So what's to be done? If you're smart enough to fill out your Canadian tax claim, you should know the answer.
