The University of Victoria is located on a beautiful campus, ten minutes (driving) from downtown Victoria. The campus itself is excellently maintained, very green, spacious, and modern. It is located on a low, flat plateau near Cadboro Bay, so cycling or walking to campus is excellent exercise.
Left is an aerial view of the University "Ring" (as published in the 2001-2002 Admissions handbook). Right is a campus map (courtesy of http://www.uvic.ca/maps/3dmap.html) - click the link to zoom in. The area was first settled by farmers in the mid- to late-1800's supplying early Victoria and the Hudson's Bay Company with fruit, jams, and livestock. A gunpowder factory and cannery were also located in nearby Cadboro Bay. During World War II, the grounds hosted an army base. In fact, a non-descript radio listening post that intercepted coded Imperial Japanese transmissions still stands in a quiet corner of the campus, and it's not uncommon for a nearby resident to dig up an old, live 40mm mortar round in their garden (much to the chagrin of the local police bomb squad) - the army base had live firing ranges used to train Canadian soldiers leaving for war. Several of the old army barracks (called 'Huts' in UVic lingo) still stand near the sports fields. UVic was founded 40 years ago, expanding on the legacy of the Victoria College (currently Camosun College) founded 60 years earlier. Since then, the campus has expanded to hold over 18,000 students. Among the typical academic facilities, UVic has a movie theatre, a student pub, several cafés and eateries, a student pub, two complete recreation/exercise centres, a barber, a travel agency, a student pub, a computer store, and many more services, including a student pub. In April 2005, I finished my last term towards my Bachelors of Mechanical Engineering (B. Eng) at UVic. My experience there so far has been fantastic... aside from the late nights, exam stress, hair loss, weight gain, and the agonizing waiting-period for final marks to be posted... but such is the life of an engineering student. Regardless, UVic is a great school - in fact, it's been voted the 3rd best comprehensive university in Canada. The majority of instructors (at least in the engineering faculty) are excellent, but to avoid liability issues, I shouldn't say which profs you should try to avoid... |
