The Monarchist
League of Canada was formed in 1970 with the principle objective of
defending the Canadian Constitutional Monarchy against those who sought to
abolish it. Today, the League
has over twenty branches across this great country, and includes Canadians
from all backgrounds and all walks of life.
Our
mandate is to continue to promote the Monarchy as an important, beneficial
and colourful Canadian institution that is integral to Canada's ever
evolving national identity.
Those opposed to the Monarchy often argue that we must make Canada a republic in order to forge a new 'more mature' identity. If we have learnt anything from the pages of history however, erasing the past to create a new future has never proven to be the answer. The Canadian Monarchy contributes to Canada a rich tapestry of traditions and ceremonies that have been with us since before Confederation. The Crown also gives us a symbolic non-partisan head of state that represents all Canadians and not just a single political party or specific region. The answer is not to throw out the Monarchy and replace it with a meaningless presidency, rather we must maintain our proud traditions, and build upon them to make for ourselves a better future.
