THE REDEDICATION OF THE KING GEORGE VI STATUE AT UBC, AUGUST 14th, 2002 text and photos by John Nightingale
To commemorate the passing of H.M. King George VI fifty years ago and to celebrate H.M. Queen Elizabeth II's Golden Jubilee, the restored and repaired statue of King George VI at UBC was rededicated on August 14th, 2002.
Professor Dennis Pavelich, University Vice President of External and Legal Affairs addressed the audience. He reviewed the history of the statue on the campus including the unhappy event of the theft of His Majesty's sword (which had been returned by the thief after thirty years and reattached for the ceremony). He also noted that the statue is the second casting of the statue extant; the first is standing at Carlton House in London, near Buckingham Palace. Professor Pavelic then introduced, in turn, Dr.William Gibson, CM, Dr.William Ibbot and Mr.Alan Russell, who is the National President of the War Amputations of Canada. The statue was a gift from the War Amps and funded by Mr.P.A.Woodward, a veteran of the Great War. The statue was originally dedicated by H.M. the Queen on June 22nd, 1958, in a different location on campus.

When the Woodward I.R.C. was donated by the Mr. and Mrs.P.A.Woodward Foundation, Mr. Woodward asked that the statue be moved across the campus and placed beside the Woodward I.R.C. In a conversation, Mr.Russell revealed that he enjoys the additional distinction of having been among those veterans who escorted the Queen across the campus during the original dedication of the statue in 1958.
