As a child we were fortunate to have a variety of pets over the years. This included a small freshwater aquarium with several neon tetras, guppies, and the like. That hobby lasted until my young teenage years when the novelty wore off I suppose, and I stopped caring for the tank and it's inhabitants.
It wasn't until I was a young adult that I got my first glimpse of a hobby marine aquarium. A friend of mine, who worked in a local fish store (LFS) at the time, bought a fabulous large acrylic aquarium and was setting it up for saltwater fish. That was about 10 years ago, and even though his aquarium wasn't setup long, I'm amazed at the changes since within the hobby with respect to equipment, technology and husbandry techniques.
Being that I am born and raised near Vancouver, BC, Canada, I've always had the ocean close by. I became a certified PADI advanced scuba diver in 1999, and being able to breathe underwater in the ocean and see the inhabitants up close rekindled my desire to have a saltwater aquarium. Seeing as I had the Pacific ocean practically right outside my door, I wanted a more exotic tropical reef aquarium, something I wouldn't see everyday.
So the project began in late January 2001 with the purchase of a used glass 100gal aquarium and stand. Prior to purchasing the tank I had spent a couple months researching the hobby on the Internet and through online discussion groups, asking hundreds of questions. After all the equipment had arrived, and I had a good basic knowledge of what was ahead of me, I filled the tank with water and began what has become one of the most expensive, yet rewarding hobbies I've ever had.
