FMA/MMA
FMA/MMA is a boundless system, meaning that it is not limited by style or
technique. It is believed that every style has something beneficial and
practical to offer, whether it is in terms of technique, training, or
philosophy. This system's philosophy is very similar to that of Jeet Kune Do and
the late Bruce Lee's philosophy of No Way is the Way. An individual can not
depend on one non-eclectic system as containing everything they need to defend
themselves in every situation. Understanding of many styles and ranges is
necessary to adequately defend oneself.
The system also believes that people must be well
versed in all ranges of self-protection in order to adequately defend themselves
in any situation. This is similar in philosophy to No Way is the Way. Learning
to defend yourself in just kicking range or punching range or any one range is
foolish. No matter how well trained you are in that one range a confrontation
can quickly and easily take you out the range your familiar with, then what,
your in trouble. You have to be able to effectively protect yourself in all
ranges of combat. This will not only make you more effective in defending
yourself but will also confuse your attacker when you can so easily flow in and
out of ranges.
FMA teaches students how to defend themselves in six ranges of self-defense.
These include Kicking, Punching, Trapping, Clinch, Split, and Ground Grappling
ranges. Beginning students focus mainly on the Kicking and Punching Ranges and
as they progress the other ranges are incorporated. Regardless of experience,
all students get some exposure to the various styles and ranges.
We do incorporate a phase grading system 1-7 a phase 4 is considered to be your
black belt and generally takes 4-6 years to attain. All phase requirement tests
are cumulative which mean that in order to pass phase 2, as an example, a
student has to perform and know all of phase 1 requirements as well and phase 2
requirements. This continues through all our training to make sure that all
students remember the basics and perfect all techniques they learn.
Youth Jeet Kune Do (JKD) ages 7-14:
At the youth level, we will introduce students to the principles that
make Jeet Kune Do so effective.
These include striking, trapping, the clinch,
incorporating economy of motion, closest
weapon to nearest target, simplicity, directness, as well as proper
structure, body connectivity, and the proper application of energy and
power.
Innovating upon techniques from western boxing, JKD,
clinch and ground fighting, we will develop proper training methodology and
study proper application in a live training environment.
The youth program is run on a phase ranking system, similar to that of
traditional martial arts school, but the training is non-traditional.
Although we do instill aspects of traditional martial arts such as
discipline respect, honor, and fortitude.

Private Lessons:
New Student
Occasionally, for some students new to the art, private lessons are a way to
learn in a more controlled setting. Often, an individual will have slightly
different goals than that of a group class. Perhaps you are an executive
wanting more personalized attention, or your schedule does not allow you
to participate in regular classes. Maybe you just want to get a head start
before you train in a group class. Whatever the reason, some students prefer to
learn in private (1-on-1) or semi-private (small groups of 2-6) lessons which
are tailored specifically to their pace, schedule, fitness level, and
personalities.
Experienced Martial Artists
Private Lessons are also a popular way for other martial artists to supplement
their training. Often, instructors or advanced students from other martial art
styles wish to learn particular aspects of the arts that we teach at Unity
Martial Arts. During private lessons, they often can learn much faster
than during a regular class due to their foundation in other martial arts.
Current Students
Private Lessons are an effective way to turbo charge your training. During
private lessons an instructor can spend one-on-one time with you to fine
tune your techniques and improve your performance. It is a popular way for
students to accelerate their progress.
Grappling:
Grappling is a wrestling style and a general term describing the aspect of
martial arts and combat sports (without kimono/GI) that focus on clinch and
ground fighting with the aim of obtaining a submission using submission holds.
The sport of submission wrestling brings together techniques from Freestyle
Wrestling, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Folk American Wrestling (Catch-as-catch-can),
Judo and Sambo.
History of Kyokushin:
Kyokushin was developed by the legendary Mas Oyama who soared to fame
in Japan after world war 2 for his amazing feats of strength. Doing such
things as bending quarters in half between his index and middle finger,
crushing stones and bricks or his ability to karate chop the horn off a
fully grown bull. Mas Oyama opened his first dojo in 1954. His style became
quickly renowned for its realism during sparring, condition no other style
had at the time. Members from all styles of Japanese and Korean martial
arts came to seek training and test their abilities. It was these members
that gave Kyokushin the worldwide nickname the "Strongest Karate".
What is Kyokushin:
The word "Kyokushin" means Ultimate Truth (reality). We believe that
whatever we teach should be practical, effective and readily usable in
everyday life. Kyokushin Karate is Budo (practical) Karate and not sport
karate. Among other things Kyokushin develops "spirit" the ability to keep
going under pressure. These aspects become clearer as students progress.
Kyokushin karate has become the synthesis of traditional karate as well
as modern training and technology. It promotes a high level of physical
fitness for all students.
