The Artist, Author, Editor & Publisher

Ernest Hekkanen is Editor-in-Chief of The New Orphic Review and co-curator of the home-based New Orphic Gallery. His paintings, collages and prints are often used as cover illustrations. Also, he is a poet, short story writer, novelist, essayist, playwright, anthologist, ghostwriter, reviewer, publisher, printmaker, painter, sculptor and carver. He has a BA degree from the University of Washington and an MFA degree from the University of British Columbia. He credits his tenacity in the twin fields of art and literature to his Finnish heritage. A self-described ‘heretic’, he feels he is able to choose for himself what he wishes to instill belief in, with the result that he doesn’t instill belief in any of the major ‘isms’ or religions of our times. A political activist for many years, he was the main financial backer of the first annual Our Way Home Reunion that took place during July of 2006, at the Brilliant Cultural Centre in Castlegar, B.C. He is a member of PEN Canada and the Federation of BC Writers. Born in Seattle, he moved to Canada in 1969, pursued by the FBI because of his anti-Vietnam War activities.

To date, Hekkanen has published 40 books. The first major assessment of his work was written by Margrith Schraner, under the title: The Reluctant Author, The Life and Literature of Ernest Hekkanen. For more information about him, consult www.abcbookworld.com and enter his name. He is also listed in the Encyclopedia of Literature in Canada (editor, William H. New, University of Toronto Press, 2002) and Contemporary Authors (Thomson Gale) in the United States. A comprehensive list of publications by Hekkanen is available at the Finnish North American Literature Association website, www.finnala.com. More information on available Hekkanen’s titles can be gleaned at the  Library and Archives Canada website,  www.collectionscanada.ca.
