Annual Festa Italiana
NewPort Village Market Square, Port Moody
Since 2003, the merchants of NewPort Village and their sponsors have followed the European tradition of hosting a village festival, welcoming thousands to the square to enjoy entertainment, food, contests, and cultural experiences for one glorious day.
Our spaghetti-eating and watermelon-eating contests have become legendary! In addition to having a great time, we also raise some money for charity with our contests, raffles and tournaments.
The first festival was a last-minute idea, organized in only a few weeks in the summer of 2003. Kirsten Anderson (The Village Toy Shoppe), Rose Pero (Casa Dolce & Casa Del Pane) Emilia Gaeta (the UPS Store) and Davide Granata our Master of Ceremonies (of Il Giardino) were instrumental in organizing the inaugural event. With the help of many other merchants who generously donated their time and effort (including myself), a festival was born. Luckily the weather was perfect, and the atmosphere (much to our delight) was truly festive.
The festival has increased in popularity each year. In 2006 the festival out-grew the abilities of your NewPort Merchants, and we passed the baton to Bosa Development to organize the festival. In 2007 we had the first festival completely organized by Bosa Development. It was fantastic!!
We have not had a drop of rain during the Festa Italiana in 5 consecutive years.
