Province
And Forest Industry Co-Operate For Conference
The
Province
is contributing $20,000 to a western Canadian forestry conference to be
held in
January 2008, Kelowna-area MLAs Al Horning (Kelowna-Lake Country), and
Rick
Thorpe (Okanagan-Westside) announced today.
The
third
bi-annual ForestEd West conference will bring together industry
representatives
from British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, the Northwest
Territories and the Yukon. Delegates will have the chance to discuss
forestry
education resources available in schools, and how to better educate
students on
the industry. One of the goals of this conference is to attract more
young
people to the forest industry. The ministries of Education and Forests
and
Range are each providing $10,000 for this conference.
“This conference is about providing
opportunities to our students so they can look forward,” said Thorpe.
“By
investing in youth and encouraging them to pursue careers in forestry,
delegates are building a strong future for British Columbia’s forest
industry.”
“This is a wonderful learning opportunity for
students and people in the industry,” said Horning. “The industry has a
chance
to look at best practices, and figure out what might be effective in
their
region.”
In
addition
to discussing best practices and finding strategies for challenges in
the
industry, the ForestEd West conference will also showcase emerging
topics such
as planning for a sustainable future and climate change.
The ForestEd West conference runs from January 24-27, 2008 in Kelowna.
