ELECTORAL BOUNDARIES COMMISSION SETS NEXT STEPS

The B.C. Electoral Boundaries Commission today announced its next steps following the adjournment of the legislative session.

The commission delivered its Preliminary Report to the Speaker on August 15, 2007. Following the release of the Preliminary Report the commission held public hearings in Prince George, Burns Lake, Vancouver, North Vancouver and Abbotsford between September 5 and 11, 2007.

On September 13, 2007, the Premier announced that: “The government intends to introduce legislation this fall that will give the commission the legal tools required to protect rural representation.”  As a result, the commission cancelled the remaining scheduled hearings.

On October 24, 2007, the government introduced Bill 39.  The legislature adjourned its session on November 29, 2007 without passing the bill.  Consequently, commission chair Justice Bruce Cohen stated: "We will complete our mandate under the existing legislation.”

The commission will submit any amendments to the Preliminary Report to the Speaker by February 15, 2008 after conducting public hearings during January 2008 in the Lower Mainland, Cariboo-Thompson, Okanagan, Columbia-Kootenay and Vancouver Island regions. The commission will also hear from MLAs as required by the legislation.

Justice Cohen also explained that: "Once we have submitted any amendments to the Speaker, it will be up to the legislature to decide on our proposals."

In addition to attending public hearings, the public is invited to comment on the Preliminary Report by email, written submission or telephone. The public can visit the commission's website for contact information at www.bc-ebc.ca and to view the public hearing schedule. Members of the public are encouraged to register if they plan to make a presentation at one of the hearings. The commission has also established a voice recorder at 1 877 660 1236 for those who wish to make an oral submission. The commission will continue to receive submissions until January 23, 2008.
