Tales From The Four Winds
Runaway Cow

My neighbour had a cow that every spring she would make her way a mile and a half down the road to my place and would get in with my bull.
After she was bred the darn cow would head back home to Ol’ Roy’s. Well the first couple of times I chuckled. Then it got pretty old seeing his cow over here using my bull all the time. So the next time she came over I called up Ol’ Roy to come get his cow. But him being an old timer; you know the last of the rough tough cowboys and he still lets his gun do the talking for him, so I knew he wasn’t about to come get her. I loaded her up and took her back home where she belonged. Ol’ Roy met me at his front gate with his favourite shotgun in hand and his big old mongrel dog just a barking at my truck. I rolled down my window and asked that old timer where he wanted me to put her. Ol’ Roy chuckled as he scratched his scruffy beard and said he thought I’d be bringing her back. After she was unloaded I told him he owed me breeding fee cause my bull throws good calves and I knew he got twins from her last year. I knew he didn’t like what I said by the look in his eye and the way he scratched his head. Then he offered me a deal. Fifty dollars and one of his calves. I thought hey that’s pretty good cause I knew he had quality stock. Well when he showed me the calf I almost told him where he could shove that deal. The calf was abandoned by its mom and ol’ Roy wasn’t doing a good job hand feeding it. The calf was scrawny and bony but I could clearly see with a little more meat on her bones she’d be a damn good heifer. So I took the deal. That was one of the best deals I’ve ever made. She turned out to be one of my best cows and Ol’ Roy’s cow never returned to visits my bull.
