Nechako River Rises
The
Nechako River rose
to greater heights than 1976 this year.
Flow reached almost 785 m3/s on June 30th. With the river this high it has been flowing
through Riverside Park. Sandbags have
been used to create dykes and protect many homes from flooding although
it has
not stopped seepage into basements. Many
thanks to all those who helped sand bagging.
It could not have been done without you.
The river is expected to stay near 750 m3/s
for the near future. This level will
help to reduce the water level behind Kenny Dam below 2800 ft. That has been considered the maximum level
but an extra foot of leeway has been allowed because this is an
exceptional
year. The high snow pack along with
spring rains has created this very unusual situation.
Use of the river or
flooded areas for boating or
swimming is not advised at this time due to the strong currents and
debris in
the river. Also wake from motor boats
could impact the structural integrity of the dykes.
Walking on dykes is also not permitted because it could weaken
them.
For
those of you who
like me haven’t been out to see Cheslatta Falls this year, they are
said to be
spectacular.

Without sand bags this motel would
have flooded.
