End of an Era
Doug and Shirley Harshbarger have decided to retire from running the NVSS Bottle Depot. The Harshbargers retired from teaching at NVSS last millennium. They had taught at NVSS for decades Doug coached many championship Senior Girls Basketball teams during that time. The last two years that he was there the Senior Girls Basketball team won the provincials. His teams had won provincials before but not back to back.
After retiring from teaching the Harshbargers took on another challenge and began to run the bottle depot for the high school. The proceeds from the bottle depot are used by the high school to help with the costs of sending teams to provincial championships and other student related expenses. Teams are also encouraged to have bottle drives to fund raise for their trips.
With their very friendly help many people in our community have become encouraged to recycle beverage bottles and cans as well as paint. One discouraging thing about recycling paint is that some people assume that if you have a paint depot you should also accept everything else, that comes in a can, which they would like to recycle. Others sneak in at night and leave everything that they don’t want anymore despite signs that clearly indicate that nothing is to be left there unless the depot is open and someone is there to receive the materials and determine which are acceptable at a paint depot. (Basically paint in cans and nothing else.)
Having Fridays off worked very well for the Harshbargers, but now that they are leaving the hours will change. Effective next week, beginning November 19th, the bottle depot will be open Wednesday to Saturday. It will open at 11 am Wednesday to Friday and at 10 pm on Saturdays. It will continue to close at 5 pm but recyclers are encouraged to arrive before 4:45 because it does take some time to sort and count the containers.
Last Friday the NVSS staff had a lunch to show their thanks to the Harshbargers for a job well done.
