Volunteers
Belmac Soccer
Belmac soccer is one of the strongest community youth soccer programs in Southwest Edmonton. This past outdoor season saw 15 teams take to the field. This is from the efforts of Brad Odsen (coordinator), Bruce Macdonald (equipment manager), Kathleen Delong (registrar), and Neil MacIver (treasurer), who have held these positions for the past 6 years. As their children are moving on to the adult program, Brad, Bruce and
Kathleen are stepping down from their posts.

To keep this great program running, we need volunteers for the positions of youth program coordinator and registrar (Jennifer Lambert as already stepped forward as equipment manager).  These positions can be shared. If you are interested please contact belmacsoccer@telusplanet.net or call Brad Odsen at 436-0938.

What's Up In
McKernan...
Timely News From The Communty
Housing Issues!
In response to the number of large housing developments proposed in the surrounding communities, a Joint Communities Development Committee has been formed. This committee, was formed at a recent emergency
meeting and will be holding a public meeting on February 21. The major item on the agenda is the proposed 5 story condominium proposed for 77 Ave. at 109th Street. Strangely enough, this was also on the agenda at
the regular monthly League meeting on February 7th, which was attended by our Councillor, Bryan Anderson. With development along 109th Street, getting people excited, city council has revisited the long range planning for this corridor. To wit, the community received a correspondence from Bryan Anderson a week after meeting with him. And it states:

“109 St. Study - Phase II
Phase II was passed yesterday by Council by a vote of 9 to 4. The G.M. of Planning has assured me that this phase will include significant community consultation.”

In a nut shell ..... the planning process which had been stalled, has now been reactivated ....... however, this is in the future, we face significant issues with the current spade of proposals currently on-the-books.  Stay
tuned to this “station”.

Meeting with the U of A
The latest liason meeting was held with the U of A in January, with Julia Peters attending on behalf of McKernan. The topics of discussion included:

Travel Demand Management Study
There is a trend to reduce the number of parking spots available on a per-capita basis. The lack of car trips will be compensated for by increased transit use (the proposed U-pass), more on-campus housing, biking, and (heaven forbid……) walking!

University Development
A Health Science Ambulatory Learning Centre is being proposed, which will combine both healthcare clinics and teaching facilities. It will be one-stop healthcare with testing and consultation both done under one roof. The clinics will be transferred from the U of A Hospital, freeing up more space for an increased number of beds. It will entail a 6-story structure in the Jubilee parking lot area with a likely opening date of
2010. Design work has yet to begin on this project, but there will be communication/consultation with the communities.

South Campus Area
There is little work going on at the moment with the greenhouses currently being used for grounds storage until spring 2006. The Saville Centre/Foote Field facilities continue to have poor pedestrian access, inadequate parking and dodgy bike access. There are no plans to remedy the situation until the LRT station and tracks are in place. Construction will only make the situation worse in the short term.

Bel/Mac Consultation Committee
Prepared by: Michelle Chalifoux

Over the next couple months, construction in the Belgravia and McKernan areas will pick up…

House removals:
Beginning the week of February 13, 2006, the remaining 21 houses along 114 Street (between University Avenue and Belgravia Road) will be removed.

Drainage work
Beginning the third week of February drainage work will begin. This includes relocating the storm sewer along the west side of 114 Street.

House assessments
Nearly completed are the house assessments for the residents that will now border the LRT tracks and of McKernan School.

Fences
A letter was sent to immediate neighbours of the house removals to set up a meeting where we could discuss the 6 ft wooden screen fence the City will build on their property line.

This letter included an update on the house removal plan (including construction drawings of the house removal sites), landscape plans (as presented to Bel/Mac in November 2005), and information sheets about
the fences.

Householder – South LRT Newsletter
All residents in Belgravia, McKernan, Park Allen and Grandview will be sent a copy of the latest edition of the South LRT newsletter (through Canada Post). This edition overviews upcoming construction work,
upcoming public consultation activities, and the Health Sciences Station opening. The newsletters should be completely delivered by Monday, February 6, 2006.

Belgravia Road Busway and Bridge
Over 400 residents attended the Nov. 30th open house. A final report that overviews public input from the session, and how we’ve integrated that feedback into our plans, will be complete by the end of February.

A draft of the report will be ready for discussion at the next Bel/Mac meeting.

As requested at the November Bel/Mac meeting, the City will attend a public meeting organized by the Belgravia Community League (March 1, 7 pm, Multi-Purpose Room, Foote Field). The City will overview plans for the busway (including planning information), and a presentation will be made to overview plans to reduce the impact of the busway on the area community.

School Construction Safety Program
Will overview the program at the next Bel/Mac meeting. Presentations have been given at Park Allen School and McKernan. Materials were given to Windsor Park and Belgravia School.

A presentation will be made to the McKernan Parents Council on February 15, 2006.

Drug-House Police Hotline

The South-side police are after the public’s assistance in spotting neighbourhood drug-houses.  This new program has already solicited dozens of calls, to the South Division station.  They now have 50 solid leads which were previously not on file. Prior to this initiative, six drug houses in south Edmonton were shut down over the spring and summer months.

The Division has 42 active files and are gathering intelligence and doing background checks on the properties. Based on the information, the sites will be prioritized and action will be taken. The ultimate aim is to reduce the increased crime associated with these premises for the surrounding neighbourhoods.

If there is a suspicious property in your area, call the hotline @ 426-8229.
