Updated December 2006
Of interest to the Community is another citizens input panel on which I have been representing McKernan. This is the West End High Speed Bus Transit Line. The assignment to our committee is to give critical advice on improved trasit to
a) the University area and
b) to the downtown
from the West End, i.e. WEM and the anticipated major population increases in Lewis Estates.
We have reported to the communities, in a series of open houses, on what can be done to get bus priorities from the West End to the South Campus (the UofA farm) where the bus will connect to the Foote Field station of the LRT. We are now looking at bus priorities from the same area to the downtown, likely connecting to NAIT and Grant McEwan College. We are also looking at an LRT extension somewhere from our area to the West End. These options include a line straight down 87 Ave on the north side of the river into the Health Sciences station on our side of the river, or possibly going by way of the Quesnell Bridge alignment into the South Campus. Both options have serious difficulties  which we are trying to sort out.

Tune in for future reports.

West Edmonton High Speed Transit Planning Study Underway

The City of Edmonton, Transportation and Streets Department has initiated a planning study to further evaluate alignments and recommend High Speed Transit (HST) routes from West Edmonton to the South LRT and from West Edmonton to Downtown.  Work on this planning study began in March 2005 and recommendations are scheduled to be presented to City Council in December, 2005.

The alignments to be evaluated for a Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) route(s) and an ultimate LRT route are shown in the following figures.

Representatives from surrounding communities and institutions have formed a stakeholder committee which will meet monthly to discuss the HST planning components as they relate to the alignments. The planning components include corridor location, station locations, transit system operations, community and property impacts and requirements, roadways and pedestrian access, river valley impacts, visual impact of the system, transit oriented development opportunities, and costs and benefits.

Stakeholder committee members will act as a liaison between the committee and their community.  In addition, two sets of open houses will be held for the public to review planning materials and provide comments.

The first set of open houses will be held June 21, 22, and 23.  Details regarding the open house locations and times will be posted in this community newsletter and on the City website, www.takeets.com under the West High Speed Transit link.  A second set of open houses will be held in October.

Inquiries regarding the West HST stakeholder process can be directed to Marilyn Steers, Kaleidoscope Consulting, marilyn@kaleidoscopeconsulting.ca or (780) 487-5139.  General inquiries regarding West HST can be emailed to hst@edmonton.ca
