Halloween Saturday, October 28, 5 to 7 p.m. At the small rink (beside the hall). Wienies, marshmallows, special treats. Housing and Development Information Session Are you looking at doing a major
renovation of your McKernan home or rental property? Do you want to
build a new house in McKernan? Are you concerned about a neighboring housing
development? Is your property being sold for redevelopment? Come to a special
Housing and Development Information Session to learn the ins and outs of
housing development in McKernan. Displays
and information will be available to answer questions like: •
What’s this “overlay” thing and how does it affect me? •
How do I make my redevelopment move smoothly through the planning process? •
How can I find out about development plans in the neighborhood BEFORE the
construction equipment arrives? • What are my rights as a homeowner and
resident? Tuesday, November 7 at 7 p.m. in McKernan Hall.
Open
House on 109 Street Redevelopment
along 109 Street: what does that mean to you? Five-story condos? Narrowing the
street? More commercial development? Higher density? No more parking lots?
Your input is critical to the shape of development along the 109 Street
corridor from 61 Avenue to Saskatchewan Drive. You can make your views heard
at an open house on Thurs., Oct. 26 from 5 to 9 p.m. at the Knox-Metropolitan
United Church (8307 – 109 Street). This open house
highlights architectural case studies by the project team that will make
recommendations to City Council about 109 Street redevelopment. Information is also available at www.edmonton.ca, under Infrastructure & Planning / Current & Future Projects / 109 Street Corridor Study, or contact project manager Erik Backstrom, 496-6055 or erik.backstrom@edmonton.ca. Barbeque bash a bundle of fun The 2nd annual McKernan Community Barbeque and Fundraiser was not blessed with good weather, but a good contingent of hardy souls made their way to the community hall Sept. 16 for an entertaining and successful fundraising event. Vice-President and Social Convenor Ann-Marie Thivierge thanks the volunteers who made the event possible: For the outpouring of time and resources: Hilary Gray, Peter Gray, Julia Peters, Roberta Franchuk, Neil Armstrong, Wayne Rogers, Avril Crossley, Frank Weichman, Terri Johnson, Steve Wallace and Camille Cunningham. From the community: the Fire Fighters from Station 3 who “flipped” the burgers in the pouring rain; the Emergency Response Team; Chum TV’s Rob Hislop and Wendy Sandwith; and Andrea Sawchuk from EZ Rock. Donors for the Silent Auction, Equipment and Food: ATCO, Capital Packers, Safeway, Shoppers Drug Mart, Kevin Taft, Fiore Restaurant, Belgravia Books & Treasures, St. Paul’s United Church, Edmonton Book Store, Queens and Teens Beauty Salon, Wild Orchid, Edmonton Travel, City of Edmonton, Uniglobe Travel, Maurice Pharmacy, Five Elements Health Store, Barb Perry – College & Association of Registered Nurses of Alberta, TD Canada Trust, XL Barber Shop, Grays’ Haven Bed and Breakfast. The community in turn thanks Ann-Marie for the significant work she did in putting the event together. It wouldn’t have happened without her. See you all next year!
Put your two bits worth into our Hall Survey The league is facing the need to do major work on our hall – it is one of the oldest community halls still operating in the city and it is showing its age. Rebuilding or renovating is a major project for the league to take on – one which opens us up to considerable financial liability. Before we proceed with any kind of project, we’d like to give McKernan community members a chance to let us know what they would like to see in a community facility. Currently the building includes a kitchen, basement area used by the McKernan Child Care Centre, and a hall (hardwood floor, no stage, capacity 100). We have a unique opportunity to work together with community partners to offer a facility that can serve many purposes. Some possibilities for partnerships are: • McKernan School: already uses our rink facilities; might be interested in space use in the daytime • McKernan Child Care Society: a very vibrant program for before- and after-school care plus daycare currently located in the basement of the hall; hall improvements would offer them the ability to expand the program which is currently full; • Community groups: the hall is regularly booked for uses such as fitness classes, dances, and parties. A larger hall or separate meeting rooms would let us host more of these events. Below is a questionnaire that asks some questions about where the League should be heading with hall redevelopment. Please fill it out and return it to Mary Heacock (along with your League membership, conveniently located on the back of the same form) by November 30, or contact any of the League executive to give your views. See Below What’s
in a name? In the spring the
community sent a letter to the transportation department protesting the name
of the 76 Avenue LRT station, which was to be called, in a burst of
originality, “76 Avenue Station.” Community League historian Ed Stover
followed this letter up with a protest to the mayor, and we appear to have met
with success! City Council passed a motion Sept. 27 to change the name to
“McKernan/Belgravia Station.” Ed’s letter
noted, “McKernan is a well-known name in our city, as well as a well-known,
identifiable, and respected community… I would think it would be a
matter of pride to assign names to LRT stations that show how much the city
feels about its communities and their people and achievements.” The residents of McKernan (and
Belgravia) have spent many hours of their time, and suffered many
inconveniences, in making the LRT project successful. Now we have some small
measure of recognition for this. Thanks to Ed and to all who expressed their
opinions to council. 2006
Outdoor Soccer Season Report The Belmac Soccer Association operates
one of the most vibrant and successful community soccer programs in the
Edmonton District. For the 2006 Outdoor Soccer Season, our small communities
fielded 17 youth teams and 5 adult teams. The age range for players is from 5
years old to over 60 years of age. In the SW Zone of the City only Riverbend,
with better than 15 times the population base, fields more teams than Belmac. Thanks
to all the wonderful parent volunteers, and of course the coaches for our
youth teams: U6 Mixed: Blair Lowe, Ron Maskell, and Dinili Sinnatamby U8

Masters: Bruce Macdonald The
success of the Belmac Soccer Association would not be possible without the
contribution of the many volunteers over the years, and those who will carry
on what has become a significant part of our communities. Party on, 73 Avenue! Residents
of 73 Avenue from 109 to 112 Street report their June 18 Block Party was a
roaring success, with fine weather, great turnout... The June 18th “Meet on
the Street” block party was a huge success. More than 40 people came out to
meet their neighbours and enjoy an afternoon barbeque on the island park. Part
of the road was closed to keep traffic at bay, and neighbours brought
barbeques, tables, chairs and of course food! Everyone from veteran residents
to new kids on the block had a great time meeting each other and exchanging
stories about the history of the avenue, the 2004 flood, home renovations and
much more. We had such a good time we are hoping to make it an annual event! - Steve, Camille, Roberta &
Thomas (Block Party Committee)
