Welcome New Residents
A warm welcome to anyone who has recently moved to our
community, be you students, new homeowners, or new arrivals to Edmonton. We hope
you find our community pleasant, healthy and vibrant, and that you will want to
make a positive contribution yourself.
Hall upgrades: news
from the gutters
Many of you will be aware that the Community League was
faced with a critical situation at the hall last spring when extensive damp and
mold was discovered in the west and north basement walls. The original area was
treated, but the contractor also discovered more mold in another area. With the
approval of the executive, the contractor eventually treated the dampness and
mold by opening the wall from the outside, removing the sodden earth to eight
feet down, and filling and treating the cracks through which the moisture had
been seeping for a long time. Soil was replaced, graded and reseeded.
To pay for this extensive work, I
immediately applied for a city repair and renovation grant, and a CFEP grant
from the provincial government. Fortunately, with some appropriate appeals to
our various representatives, including the mayor, and the provincial minister
of gaming and lotteries, both levels of government came through in July, and
we have now met our commitment to the contractor.
During the grant application process I
identified two other projects which we will now focus on completing, to
enhance the energy efficiency of the hall. One is to replace the eaves-troughs
to prevent ice damming, and the other is to re-insulate the attic, to lessen
heat loss from the roof. We will be calling for volunteers for a work party to
complete the latter this fall!
The whole situation regarding the
condition of the hall has certainly made me reflect on the value of the
facility to the community. It must be one of the most used halls in the city,
being the home of a growing out-of-school-care program, many different evening
classes and week-end rentals. Now might be the time to start looking to the
future, and as a community we may need to decide if we are going to be
continually patching our ageing facility, or whether we should be replacing
it. No doubt the debate will rage, so why not join us in this momentous
decision over the next few months, take out a membership in the community
league and give us your “two cents worth” on this issue!
Whatever
your feelings about the above, do come and join us on September 16 in the hall
and rink for a fun afternoon of fundraising activities, so that we can start
the process of gathering funds for whatever we decide to do to improve our
facilities. You will also be able to buy memberships there.

109 Street Study
City Council is looking to develop a policy to manage the
type, quality and appearance of redevelopment in the 109 St. corridor, from 61
Ave to the High Level Bridge. In May, McKernan residents participated in a
“walk-about” with the City of Edmonton, our fellow neighboring communities,
and the City’s consultants. The City and its consultants conducted a
multi-community workshop in June and they received much input from the various
interested groups.
In September, there will be a meeting
to give community stakeholders the opportunity to review the concepts and
suggest refinements. Input received at meeting will be used to develop
recommendations that will be presented for public review and comment at an
open house October 26 at Knox-Metropolitan United Church. Following this open
house, the recommendations will be revised as necessary and prepared for
presentation to City Council this winter.
Go to: www.edmonton.ca and select
“Infrastructure & Planning/ Current and Future Projects”
then “109 St Corridor
Study” to get the latest information.
South LRT and Other Transportation News
Trolley under the gun
Trolley
supporters are urged to attend the Sept. 19 meeting of the Transportation and
Public Works committee of City Council to prevent a freeze on trolley
expenditures for the next two years. Councillor Krushell has indicated that she
will suggest such a freeze, which would mean the trolley overhead through
Belgravia/McKernan displaced by LRT construction will not be rebuilt, and
trolley service will not be returned to Belgravia/McKernan.
West End Rapid Transit – Open Houses
There
are three open houses scheduled for West End to Foote Field bus rapid transit.
The closest venue for us is Saturday Sept 16, noon to 4 p.m. at Saville Sports
Centre Gymnasium, 6501 115 Street.
SLRT
Construction
on the noise fence along the west side of 114 St. is beginning. All else is on
schedule.

Pocket Park a Winner!!
The McKernan-Garneau Pocket Park (University Ave. and 112
St.) was selected as 3rd Place Winner in the Partners in Parks category of the
Edmonton Horticultural Society’s 2006 Garden Competition. A slate of
hard-working volunteers, under the direction of Pocket Park guy Peter Gray plus
long-time assistant Marilyn Logan, kept the park looking great this summer. A
sign has been installed at the park to note the honor, and a photo is included
in the slideshow on the EHS website (www.edmontonhort.com).
This is the second time that the park has been a
winner in this category. McKernan and Garneau can take pride in having such a
lovely feature maintained through community effort. If you are interested in
helping with the fall cleanup (date to be announced), contact Peter Gray (434-0480).
