THE EVOLUTION OF "SQUIRRELY"

Squirrely
‘Squirrely’ - CU-2005-692 hatched 7 June/05, shown at 5 days old with a baby squirrel.

How did ‘Squirrely’ get her name? I was out in the breeding loft one day placing new shavings in and around the nest bowls that had young birds in them. This one nest, the hen is quite flighty and she departed just before I opened the nest box. Looking inside I noticed two in the nest rather than just the one I expected.. I saw it was a baby squirrel cosied up, sleeping beside the baby young squeeker. Having been covered by the hen, apparently overnight. I took the nest bowl out and placed it in an unoccupied nest and dashed to the garage where I thought I had left my digital camera, but no, it was in the computer room in the house. Returning shortly to the loft the baby squirrel was still in the nest alongside the pigeon. I got these two pics before the squirrel woke up and left quite rapidly.

I’ve had racing pigeons off and on since I was 14 years old and am now 69 and have never seen anything like this happening.

Another pic above of ‘Squirrely’ at 10 days old feathering out in her nest bowl and further pic of her at 21 days old where I placed on ladder while I cleaned out her nest box. This was before she was old enough to be put out on the landing board.

‘SQUIRRELY’, recent pic taken today 8 Nov./05, now 154 days old. She went to all training points without getting lost and to all races, clocking a 7th place in her first race.

She is from a blue bar cock bird and a black hen.
