Workshop 8

CINEMATOGRAPHY
Tuesday June 21st, 6:30 to 9:30PM

Cinematography, Videography & Lighting Styles

The goal of this workshop is to help participants create a unique aesthetic with composition, camera movement, lenses, filters, and lighting. Once understood, this will give your film a distinctive look despite being a low budget drama or documentary.

What are the basic tenets of good cinematography? What is innovative and what is creative in cinematography? Various classic and contemporary films will be analyzed with this purpose in mind. One of the key creative aspects of a production is the kind of lighting that will be used to establish the visual and even psychological tone of the film.

This workshop will show how effective the use of natural lighting and set lighting can be for both documentary and dramatic productions as well as how to be creative with light and ways to be less formal as to how light can be applied to a given situation. In addition, this workshop will help to understand how lighting works and look at various lighting set ups whether it be for interviews or dramatic scenes.

Assignment: Videotape a scene where you can experiment with handheld vs. tripod style camera work, shoot the scene from various angles under a variety of lighting conditions.
