My Discussion Credo

I have read (and unfortunately participated in) many an unpleasant electronic encounter on the internet. To try and avoid these I make the following commitments before we begin our conversations. You do not have to make any commitments before emailing me, but you should know that I may choose to end the conversation if you do not abide by standards comparable to those I strive to live up to.

  1. Your privacy will be respected. I will not post private email conversations on my website without prior approval.
  2. Though I may thoroughly disagree with, or in some cases passionately despise, your perspective, I will respect you as a person, and your right to believe what you choose to.
  3. I will ask questions to clarify ambiguity rather than assuming your intended meaning. I will do my best to thoroughly understand your perspectives.
  4. I will stick to rational discussions about worldviews and detach my emotions from the conversations.
  5. I will focus the conversation as narrowly as possible to address one issue at a time, rather than covering a wide range of possibly related tangents.
