Winlaw Seed Exchange:

Sunday February 15, 2004, 10am till 3pm at the Winlaw Hall, Highway 6, Winlaw, BC
Slide Show:  Noon - 1pm. Traditional agriculture in Nepal. See A Visit to Nepal in Spiral News.

On February 15th, it’s Seedy Sunday time in the Slocan Valley. Seedy Saturdays & Sundays have been organized around the country for many years. The first Seedy Saturday started in Vancouver in 1989. This year there will be around 40 events in Canada and nearly half of them in BC.
In the Slocan Valley, the Annual Seed Exchange started in the early 90s.  It’s a gathering of gardeners, seed savers, organic farmers, & many people who enjoy growing food, flowers & other plants in the summer.  People have been carrying seeds and trading seed since the humans have been walking around the planet. After being grown in the same region for many years, the plants & the seeds they produce evolve and adapt to that region. The result is often a plant that is more adapted to the different microclimates and other characteristics of that local region. It can also produce plants that have more resistance to diseases, pests, etc.
The Kootenays have a very particular climate and some years we can have a very short growing season. Certain seeds of vegetables have been saved in this region for at least 50 years and are more adapted to this region.
Everyone is invited to come and meet other seed savers & gardeners. Bring your seeds if you saved your own seeds. If you don’t have any seeds to trade you might be able to buy the one that you’re looking for.
If you come between noon and 1:00 pm you can enjoy the slide presentation on traditional agriculture system in Nepal.

In the winter 2003, 5 canadian farmers and a food activist visited organic farmers in Nepal as a follow up to the South Asia Canada Dialogue on the Future of Agriculture. They spent a few days with families in the Rasuwa District in the Himalayans Mountains in North East Nepal. A slide presentation will show some of the traditional agriculture systems in Nepal.
