![]() Auchinachies are famous in literature and ballads, so famous in fact that Loreena McKennitt has recorded a ballad about us. First, though, here's an old ballad newly discovered by Professor Gerald Muir Auchinachie that makes mention of Auchinachies. The title is "The Marquis of Huntly's Retreat from the Battle of Sheriffmuir" and while it may not be entirely flattering to the family, it makes for interesting reading. Jerry has also done some extensive research into the history of the events described in the ballad and has written some background that will be of interest. Next, and more flattering, is the Ballad of Lord Saltoun and Auchinachie. Or, as recorded by Loreena McKennitt, "Annachie Gordon" from the album, Parallel Dreams. Read the ballad and the notes provided by Jerry Auchinachie and then follow the link to the McKennitt home page where you can download a small audio file and hear some of the song for yourself. Finally, Jerry has written a wonderful set of verses for his father, James William (Bill) Auchinachie, who was logger of reknown in the Cowichan Valley. Jerry has provided some notes for this piece as well. |
