The Malamute

The Lower Malamute is presently CLOSED (September 2002)

This awesome chunk of rock is located directly opposite The Chief parking lot, and sits facing Howe Sound, like a mini-Grand Wall. It is not really visible from the road. Climbing on this feature is really divided into two areas.

LOWER MALAMUTE

This is an area of flawless steep granite peppered with what I consider to be the best climbs in Squamish. Clean Crack, Caboose, Penguins In Bondage, The Big Eave, Hand Jive, Overly Hanging Out, and Crescent Crack to name a few. Its position along the sound and the tracks of BC Rail make it a unique and wonderful place. Unfortunately, a recent meeting between a train and person (not a climber) have caused BC Rail to close the area. Negotiations are in progress.

UPPER MALAMUTE

Until the most recent guide, the upper bands of the Malamute were devoid of routes. Now they have seen the hand of the drill. There are now more than a few bolted sport-o routes to go and do. Low risk, low return, but the atmosphere is nice.
