Squamish, BC

North of Vancouver, there is a legendary granite monolith that rests at the far reaches of Howe Sound. I remember the first time I saw it because it was nearly the death of me.

Rachel and I were navigating the twisting highway that follows the beautiful shoreline to the town of Squamish. Coming around a corner, I saw it.

The granite dome in the distance seemed to bully its surroundings with its size. The Chief, as it is called, rises 2,000 ft, going from steep slab to overhanging. Its bulk is divided by deep gullies into roughly four areas with independent summits. At its feet are many smaller domes and crags. There is a lifetime of superb climbing here.

I almost veered off the road.
